Oregon-born and Nashville-based artist, Mat Kearney has made a conscious decision to approach songwriting in a different way with his most recent album, "Young Love." As a fan of hip-hop since childhood, Kearney actually turned to the genre for a little inspiration for his new album.
"I approached "Young Love" like a singer-songwriter would approach a hip-hop record, we would start with beats or grooves that your body already responds to. It was a fun and fulfilling experiment," said Kearney. The album opens with, "Hey Mama," a song written about how Kearney and his wife first met in Tennessee, bringing listeners up close and personal with Kearney's world and fresh sounds.
Each phase of Kearney's career has been marked with genuine evolution. His first independent release in 2004, "Bullet," introduced his unmistakable croon and vibrant writing style. Then in 2006, he signed with Columbia and released his first formal full-length album, "Nothing Left to Lose," followed by "City of Black & White" in 2009.
Kearney has been on tour with artists such as John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Keane and The Fray and his music has been featured in television shows such as "30 Rock," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Hills," "Friday Night Lights," "Scrubs," "NCIS" and several others.
The performance is sponsored by the Student Activities Council Spotlight and Diversity committees with the Student Activities Council Concert Committee.
