'CAGE 100' Luther College celebrates American composer John Cage's 100th birthday Sept. 4-5

Luther College will host "CAGE 100," a series of events on campus that celebrate the life and work of the American composer John Cage, Sept. 4-5.

Luther composer-in-residence Brooke Joyce will present a lecture on Cage Tuesday, Sept. 4, 8 p.m., in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The lecture, titled "'I have nothing to say and I am saying it'; John Cage and the musical poetics of non-communication," is part of the Paideia Text and Issues Lecture series and will feature Luther student and faculty performers.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, short performances of Cage's work will be offered across campus:

"Compositional Experiment: Writing Home about Indeterminacy," an original dance piece by Amanda Hamp, Luther assistant professor of dance, featuring music and words by Cage, will be held in the Center for the Arts throughout the day.

"Williams Mix," comprised of electronic sounds, will play in Dahl Centennial Union throughout the day.

"Aria with Fontana Mix," a work for solo voice and pre-recorded sounds performed by Rachel Ware, Luther alumni guest lecturer in music, will be performed in the Jenson-Noble Music Hall Choir Room at 9:05 a.m.

"Water Walk," a humorous piece Cage created for television, will be performed by Luther senior Jacob DeBacher at 10:20 a.m. in the Sampson-Hoffland atrium.

"Lecture on Nothing," Cage's seminal spoken word piece, will be performed by various members of the Luther faculty on the lawn in front of Main Hall at 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m.,
2:30 p.m., and 3:45 p.m. Rain location is Valders Hall of Science lobby.

"Four2," a choral work performed by members of Collegiate Chorale will be held in the Jenson-Noble lobby at 3:45 p.m.

The day will end with a performance of Cage's "star chart" composition, "Atlas Eclipticalis," at 7 p.m. on the lawn in front of Preus Library. All members of the community are invited to bring an instrument to play. Instructions will be provided. The performance will end by 7:45 p.m. Rain location is the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
