Sept. 18, 2009
The Luther College Student Activities Council Diversity Committee will present the “Jesus, Justice, and Jazz Tour” Sunday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Center for Faith and Life.
The event is co-sponsored by Luther College Ministries and Luther Wellness. Tickets are $8 per person at the door, $7 per person for groups of 10 or more or $7 per person with a non-perishable food pantry donation, and are available at the Luther Box Office, telephone (563) 387-1357 or firstname.lastname@example.org, open Monday-Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; extended hours Thursdays: open until 7 p.m.
The concert is a combination of music, storytelling and service designed to inspire young people to spread the word of Jesus in their communities.
The artists performing will be Agape (David Scherer), Lost and Found (Michael Bridges and George Baum), and Rachel Kurtz.
Scherer helped found Joint Urban Ministries in Praise, an organization that works with youth to develop leadership through fine arts. He has traveled to El Salvador, where he learned how the Christian church is at the center of social change. After returning from El Salvador Scherer had the vision to start the “Jesus, Justice, and Jazz Tour,” because he felt God was calling him to teach youth how to be justice leaders in society.
Bridges and Baum integrate a unique musical style with humorous storytelling to connect with each of their listeners. In addition to performing for hundreds of thousands of people, Bridges and Baum have had the opportunities of going to Peru and Rwanda through their partnerships with numerous charitable agencies.
Kurtz shares personal testimonies of sadness and triumph that captivate her audience. She has performed at the last three ELCA Youth Gatherings and has traveled to Africa and India with her music ministry. She has a desire to make a difference in the world through her music and an ambition for global justice.
