General Scholarships
The following list indicates scholarships designated for any area of study and the conditions of eligibility. Recipients of these scholarships are selected by the faculty and the student financial aid office.
The A&J Petersburg Agency Scholarship, established by A&J Petersburg Agency to provide financial assistance with preference given to students from Northeast Iowa.
The Maynard and Minerva Aaker Family Scholarship, established in memory of their parents, Olaf and Ella Aaker and Nils and Emma Fredrickson, to provide scholarships for deserving students from the Kenyon-Wanamingo, MN and Maricopa County, AZ areas.
The Maynard E. Aaker and George C. Strom Scholarship, established by Ervin and Phyllis Johnson for students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance with preference given to students from the Lafayette County, Wisconsin, area.
The Admissions Special Opportunity Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students in order to meet a higher percentage of demonstrated need for financial assistance, with preference given to students with excellent academic or leadership qualities, and to students that bring diversity to Luther College from areas that include, but are not limited to, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Racine, Kansas City, Waterloo, Des Moines, and Omaha.
The Aid Association for Lutherans Scholarship, established by the Aid Association for Lutherans, Appleton, Wisconsin, to assist materially by means of scholarships and grants-in-aid in the education and training of full-time students enrolled at Luther College, who are members of Aid Association for Lutherans.
The Altorfer Family Scholarship, established by Edward J. and Betty Altorfer to provide scholarships to qualified male students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Alumnae of the Former Lutheran Ladies Seminary Fund, established to provide scholarships to worthy women students.
The Alumni Council Scholarship, established by the Luther College Alumni Council, to be awarded to qualified students in need of financial assistance with preference given to descendants of Luther alumni.
The Hazel and Alan Amundson Scholarship, established by the Amundson family in honor of Hazel and Alan Amundson, to provide scholarships for students who are members of First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, and/or graduates of Decorah High School.
The Richard and Barbara Amundson Scholarship, established by Richard and Barbara Amundson to provide scholarships to graduates of Decorah High School or students who are members of First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa.
The Anderson Family Scholarship, established by Maynard Anderson to be awarded for study away from campus to qualified junior or senior students who show evidence of financial need and/or extraordinary potential and who are considering careers in public service or nongovernmental service.
The Andrew O. Anderson Memorial Scholarship, established in honor of Andrew Anderson 1901, by the estate of his daughter, Betty Juhasz, to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The H. George and Jutta F. Anderson Scholarship, established by Luther College Regents in recognition of Dr. H. George Anderson’s leadership as president of Luther College from 1982 to 1995, to be awarded to students with financial need, with preference given to students who contribute diversity to the Luther College student body.
The Lars and Niels Herrmann-Anderson Scholarship shall be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance and are participating in a study-abroad experience for a J-term.
The Steven Mark Anderson Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Rev. Steven Mark Anderson ’85 by his parents, Lloyd and Mary, to be awarded to upperclass students who qualify for the Student Support Services program at Luther College.
The Alfred N. Arveson Memorial Scholarship, established through the estate of Constance Gilham Arveson to provide scholarships to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial aid.
The Helen Atwater Scholarship, to be awarded to needy and worthy students who are native-born citizens of the United States and members of a Protestant church.
The Sally (Swab) and Brad Austin Family Scholarship shall be awarded to qualified male students from rural communities in Iowa and/or Minnesota.
The Bachelder Endowed Scholarship, established to provide scholarship assistance to members of the sophomore, junior, or senior class having financial need. Preference to be given to students majoring in business, music, art, or the premedical area.
The George O. Bachelder and Orchard Mdzonga Endowed Scholarship was established to provide awards to a first-year U.S. student(s) of African American decent who shows need of financial assistance and qualifies for a federal Pell grant or other similar federal assistance. This award shall be made in addition to other need-based assistance the student may receive from Luther.
The Carleton P. and Genevieve Baker Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need with first preference given to students majoring in the humanities.
The Jeffrey D. and Shirley A. Baker Scholarship, established by Luther College Regents in recognition of Dr. Jeffrey and Shirley Baker’s leadership and service to Luther College from 1996-1999; to be awarded to students who show need of financial assistance.
The Esther S. and Frank P. Barth Scholarship, established by the family of Esther S. and Frank P. Barth, with preference given to National Merit Scholars, or if none available, to students majoring in economics, accounting, management, or mathematics.
The Janet and Norman E. Barth Scholarship shall be awarded to students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Bentdahl Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who are graduates of New Ulm Public High School, New Ulm, Minnesota.
The Arthur P. and Mary Louise Bergee Endowed Scholarship, to commemorate the long association Art Bergee has had with Luther College as a student, regent, campaign chairman, class agent, and many other forms of assistance and support. This scholarship shall be awarded to students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Kenneth L. Berger Endowed Scholarship, established in recognition of Kenneth L. Berger’s leadership and impact on the department of speech at Luther College from 1941 to 1957, to be awarded to students with financial need and majoring in speech or communications.
The Glenn and Delia Bergland Scholarship Grants, established to express appreciation to all past and present members of the Winnebago Cooperative Telephone Association (RTA) and the Winnebago County Rural Electric Cooperative Association (REA), whose entities were organized and managed by Glenn Bergland for 25 years and 35 years, respectively. Recipients must be U.S. citizens who are members of families served by Winnebago RTA or REA at present or in the past, and who are intending to pursue majors in the natural sciences.
The Victor and Muriel Bjorgo Foundation Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to worthy students who may be in need of financial assistance.
The Marie and Ploma Blaha Endowed Scholarship, provided to first-year students from northeast Iowa, preferably Monona, who demonstrate a financial need.
The Helen Adams Bodensteiner Scholarship, established for one or more sophomore, junior, or senior students who show talent and promise in speech and drama.
The Michael and Betty Borge Scholarship, established by Michael ’38 and Betty Borge to provide scholarship support for students from the Cambridge-Lake Ripley (Wis.) Public School District. If none, candidates may be considered from the Deerfield School District from Dane or Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
The Julius J. and Joanna Jacobson Brauer Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to Luther students who have shown exemplary Christian character and financial need as well as academic achievement.
The Marie C. Brincks Memorial Scholarship, established by Marie’s parents, Leo and JoAnn Brincks, and many friends to recognize and honor her commitment to transfer students interested in Luther College. Awards shall be made to students with a minimum of a 2.75 transfer grade point.
The Bruening Rock Products, Inc., Scholarship, to be awarded to first-year or sophomore students who are preferably dependent sons and daughters of employees of Bruening Rock Products.
The C. Norman Brunsdale Endowed Scholarship was established by Edson and Margaret Larson to honor Norman Brunsdale. Awards shall be made to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance.
The G. Elmer Brunsdale Memorial Scholarship, to be awarded to students on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and potential for success in their chosen field.
The Brunsvold Endowed Scholarship, established by the estate of Myrtle Brunsvold, in memory of her husband Emil Brunsvold, his brother Jorgen, and their grandfather, Jorgen Brunsvold, who served on the original building committee of Luther College, to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The Bunge Family Scholarship, to be awarded to a qualified student who has demonstrated a commitment to learning and service, with first preference given to first-year students with need for financial assistance. The recipient shall hold the award for four years unless deemed ineligible to qualify.
The Lavern and Audrey Busse Scholarship, to be awarded to academically qualified students with preference given to individuals from Ascension Lutheran Church and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. If none are available, then to students from the Marion and Cedar Rapids area.
The Camcar-Textron Scholarship, to be awarded to dependent sons and daughters of employees of Camcar-Textron, Decorah, Iowa, during their first year; if none, upperclass students may qualify to receive awards.
The David Carlson Endowed Scholarship, established by David Carlson ’85 to provide scholarships for students in need of financial assistance.
The Catlin-Totten Family Scholarship, established by Joan ’63 and David Totten to be awarded to students from Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin or, if none are enrolled, to students from the Milwaukee area.
The Elmer B. and Charlotte T. Cato Scholarship was established to provide awards to students who can show need of financial assistance.
The Col. L.C. Christensen Charitable and Religious Foundation Scholarship, established by the Col. L.C. Christensen Foundation to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The Carl Andreas Carlsen Christy Scholarship, established by Miss Blanche Christy of Bismarck, North Dakota, in memory of her father, to be awarded to needy and worthy students.
The Harley C. and Joyce Kvaalen Carlson Scholarship for Lutheran Camp Counselors was established to provide awards to students who can show evidence of financial need who are involved in the campus congregation and who have served as a summer counselor at one of the Lutheran Bible Camps. Preferably Christikon Lutheran Bible Camp, McLeod, MT and /or Good Earth Lutheran Bible Camp, Spring Valley, MN.
The Christine C. Cihlar Memorial Scholarship, established to commemorate the life of Chris Cihlar as a student leader, loyal alumna, and administrator, to be awarded to qualified students in need of financial assistance, and who are of high academic standing and leaders in co-curricular activities.
The Class of 1931 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1931 to assist worthy students with financial need.
The Class of 1933 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1933, awarded to students with financial need with preference given to those who are direct descendants of the 1933 class members.
The Class of 1941 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1941, to be awarded to incoming first-year or any upper-class students who have proven academic excellence with demonstrated financial need.
The Class of 1942 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1942, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1948 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1948, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1949 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1949, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1951 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1951, to be awarded to qualified students who show evidence of financial need, with preference given to descendants of the 1951 class members.
The Class of 1953 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1953 to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need with preference given to descendants of Class of 1953 members.
The Class of 1954 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1954 to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Class of 1957 Scholarship and Loan Fund, established by the Class of 1957, to provide loans and scholarships to members of the sophomore, junior and senior classes.
The Class of 1962 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1962, to be awarded to qualified upperclass students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1964 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1964, to be awarded to qualified students who show evidence of financial need, with preference given to sons and daughters of the class of 1964 graduates.
The Class of 1965 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1965, to be awarded to juniors or seniors, with preference given to sons or daughters of graduates from the Class of 1965.
The Class of 1966 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1966 to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1968 Scholarship, established by the Class of 1968, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1973 Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Class of 1974 Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Ralph and Ethel Colrud Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students with financial need, with preference given to students from Faith Lutheran Church in Rosholt, Wisconsin, and/or New Hope Lutheran Church in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin. If none are available, second preference shall be given to students from the Rosholt, Wisconsin, school system, with third preference given to students from Portage County, Wisconsin.
The Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by the Cowles Foundation, with awards given on the basis of financial need.
The Cultural and Racial Diversity Scholarship, established by the faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Luther to provide financial assistance to qualified Asian American, African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students who are citizens of the United States.
The Edward H. Dahly Scholarship, established by the estate of Edward H. Dahly to provide financial assistance to deserving students, with preference given to students who are residents of southern Minnesota and northeast Iowa.
The Willie and Denise Davismckennie Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students from the inner city of Chicago or the Bahamas who can show evidence of financial need and a strong work ethic, and who contribute to the diversity of Luther’s student body.
The C. H. and Elaine E. DeBuhr Family Scholarship, established by Elaine DeBuhr to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The DECO Products Scholarship, to be awarded to the dependent sons and daughters of employees of DECO Products, Decorah, Iowa. When no DECO Products employee is eligible, the scholarship shall be awarded to a student from Winneshiek County.
The Decorah College for Women (1932-36) Scholarship, established by its graduates to honor the memory of that institution. The Decorah College for Women began in 1932 and ceased independent operation when Luther College became coeducational in 1936. Recipients of the scholarship must show evidence of financial need and academic potential.
The Anton DiGiovanni Scholarship, to be awarded to students from Milwaukee County, Wisconsin who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Wilbur H. Dosland Scholarship, established for students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The East Clermont Lutheran Church Founding Congregation Scholarship, to be awarded to first-year students having financial need, with preference given to students from East Clermont Lutheran Church; if none, to students from the Clermont-Elgin area; if none, to any qualified students.
The Sonja Carlsen Egenes Scholarship was established by John Egenes, to be awarded to a qualified student who has a GPA of 2 or above and can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Lillian E. Ellerman Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by Lillian E. Ellerman to provide scholarships for worthy students who demonstrate the need for financial assistance.
The Martin V. Ellerman Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by Lillian E. Ellerman in memory of her brother to provide scholarships to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Martin V. Ellerman, Ida Ellerman Radke, Alvida Ellerman Hale, and Lillian E. Ellerman Scholarship Fund, established by Alvida C. Hale and Lillian E. Ellerman to provide financial assistance to worthy students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Erik R. and Marjorie Ellingson Family Scholarship, established by all Erik R. and Marjorie Ellingson family members, to be awarded to junior or senior students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance. Awards shall be made in alternating years to accounting majors and premedical/nursing majors.
The Laura M. and Martin K. Elstad Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need with first preference given in alternating years to a female physical education major and then to a male science or music major.
The Dorothy Y. Emmons Scholarship in Elementary Education, established by Louise Rolfs, to be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance, with preference given to upperclassmen majoring in elementary education.
The John C. Esse and Katinka Bilsie Endowed Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving students.
The Farwell Endowed Scholarship honors Luther’s sixth President and his wife, E.D. and Helen Farwell. Recipients must be National Merit Scholars or high ability minority or native American students.
The E.D. Farwell Presidential Scholarship, in honor of Dr. E.D. Farwell, the sixth president of Luther College, to be awarded each year at the sole discretion of the current president of Luther College.
The Oliver C. Ferguson Endowed Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving students.
The First Lutheran Church Women Scholarship, provided by the women of First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, to be awarded to upperclass students from that congregation on the basis of academic record and need.
The C. Alford Fjeldstad, Jr. Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. C. Alford Fjeldstad '05 and Nora Fjeldstad and in honor of Joan Fjeldstad Losen '53, to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The Jan and Tim Fleming Endowed Scholarship, established by Jan and Tim Fleming to provide scholarships to students in need of financial assistance with preference given to minority students.
The A.N. and Florence B. Fogdall Endowed Scholarship, awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of scholastic merit.
The D.C. Friedlund Family Scholarship, established by Mary E., Duane C., and Duane L. Friedlund in memory of James P. Friedlund, to be awarded to properly enrolled first-year students.
The Fund for Special Need Students, established by Gene Haugland to provide equipment or services for special need students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Gamble-Skogmo Scholarships, established by the Gamble-Skogmo Foundation to provide scholarships for deserving Twin Cities area students.
The Richard and Lorraine Gandrud Scholarship, provided to give awards to students from Minnesota, with preference given to students from Pope County, Minnesota.
The John Garwood Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance with first preference given to students from Vinton, Iowa, and Decorah, Iowa.
The Germanson Endowed Scholarship, established by the estate of Tomina Germanson in memory of sister Mathilda Haraldson and husband Henry Germanson, for students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Myhren I. and Margaret Gjerde Scholarship, to be awarded to students who have an interest in fitness and wellness.
The Lorraine and Jesse Goetsch Scholarship, established by Jesse, Bruce and Cosette Goetsch, for students who demonstrate financial need, with first preference for art majors, and second preference for education majors.
The Carl F. Granrud Memorial Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving students who demonstrate need for financial assistance.
The John P. and Janice Engle Gray Scholarship, established for qualified upper-class students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Gregerson Scholarship, established by Larry and Zylpha Gregerson to celebrate the education that their son Mark received at Luther. To be awarded to outstanding students who have been named Presidential or Regent Scholars, regardless of financial need.
The Landis Gross Scholarship, established in memory of Pastor Landis Gross by his family, along with friends and members of the congregations he served, to be awarded to qualified students from congregations served by Pastor Gross.
The Charlotte B. Schilling Grue Scholarship, established by Vernon C. and Mary Ellen Grue Iverson in recognition of Charlotte Grue’s 25 years of dedicated service in the Luther College Health Service. Awards shall be given to students who can show evidence of financial need, with preference given to older non-traditional students.
The Irvin W. and Marie Colrud Gunther Family Scholarship, established by Marie Colrud Gunther to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance with first preference to students from St. Timothy Lutheran Church, or secondly from Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, both of Menasha, Wis. Third preference shall be given to students from the Neenah-Menasha School District.
The H & H Distributing Company, Inc., Endowed Scholarship, established to provide scholarships for students from North High School, West Union, Iowa, or the close surrounding area who show evidence of financial need.
The Rolfe A. and Helen (Hoff) Haatvedt History Scholarship, established by Helen Hoff Haatvedt ’36, Loren A. ’63, and Ruth E. ’69, in memory of Professor Rolfe A. Haatvedt ’29, former registrar and professor of classics at Luther and foreign service officer, is awarded to outstanding senior history majors, with preference given to students in ancient history or those considering foreign service careers.
The Alvida C. Hale Memorial Scholarship, established by Lillian E. Ellerman in memory of her sister to provide scholarships to worthy students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Jessie Hallett Memorial Scholarship, established by the Hallett Charitable Trusts to be awarded to students from Minnesota who show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The August A. Halverson Scholarship, established by the estate of Mayme Halverson in memory of her husband, assists worthy and deserving students.
The Hansen Family Scholarship, established by the Hansen family to provide assistance to qualified students in need of financial assistance. Preference shall be given to students from Savage and Burnsville, Minnesota, and from Chickasaw County, Iowa, including students from Turkey Valley and New Hampton high schools.
The Carroll M. and Alice F. Hanson Scholarship, established by Jean Hanson, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Carroll M. and Alice F. Hanson Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Dr. J. Tillman and Mildred Hanson and Dr. Paul T. Hanson Family Scholarship, established by members of the Hanson family in memory of Dr. Paul T. Hanson ’51 and his parents, Dr. J. Tillman ’18 and Mildred Hanson, to provide scholarships to qualified returning students.
The Kermit O. and Jane E. Hanson Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to highly qualified junior or senior students with majors in either economics or business, with evidence of financial need.
The Haugland Family Scholarship was established by Ray and Dorothy Haugland and their children to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance who are either children of Lutheran clergy or children of Lutheran teachers and are involved in extra-curricular activities.
The William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships for minority students.
The Heileman Endowed Scholarship Fund, established for qualified students from La Crosse, Wisconsin, and/or Dubuque, Iowa, who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The William A. Heintz Scholarship, established through the estate of William Heintz to be awarded to qualified students with financial need with first preference given to students from Chickasaw County, Iowa, or, if none, from any rural area.
The Mark and Lois Helland Family Scholarship, awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Clara and Henry Hellie Scholarship Fund, to be awarded to students in good academic standing.
The Hemp Scholarship, established by Richard C. and Joann Harr Hemp to be awarded to qualified students who show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Abner A. and Lola M. Hendrickson Scholarship, established with preference to be awarded to physically handicapped students who can show need for financial assistance.
The Kristi Lee Hermeier Scholarship, established by the family in memory of Kristi Lee Hermeier, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Herndon Family Scholarship, established by Larry and Jane Herndon, to be awarded to students who demonstrate leadership and a strong religious conviction in the Christian faith.
The Hervey Endowed Scholarship, established by Professor Norma Hervey and her husband, William, to support an international student in the senior year who needs financial assistance to graduate and to current Luther juniors and seniors with a need for financial assistance who desire to study abroad.
The Lester and Helen Hetager Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need with first preference to students from South Dakota, Colorado, Missouri, or Lincoln County, Minn. and second preference to students planning a career in medicine, pharmacy, or nursing.
The John Olson Hjelle and Anne Stumley Memorial Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships for deserving first-year students who require financial assistance.
The Yvonne Ho Scholarship, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Henry and Arlene Hoff Family Scholarship was established by family and friends, to be awarded to a qualified junior and senior students with demonstrated need for financial assistance and a grade point average of at least 3.0, preference shall be given to students majoring in athletic training, if none, preference shall be given to students majoring in health, or physical education.
The Jim and Betty Holey Family Scholarship, established by Jim and Betty Holey to be awarded to students who show need for financial assistance.
The Clifford and Valerie Holien Scholarship, established to provide scholarships to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Mary Jo Homstad Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Engebret Nelson (Sebo) Hong Scholarship, established by Anna E. Hong in memory of her father, to be awarded to deserving young students, residents of Norway, who desire to prepare themselves for careers in teaching, government service, business, social service, performing arts, law, or medicine and who meet the requirements for such study at Luther College.
The Selma B. Hougan Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need.
The Robert and Arlene Houlihan Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Huebner Kegarise Endowed Art Scholarship, to be awarded to talented and deserving art students.
The Gerhard Hystad Scholarship Fund, established through his last will and testament, to provide scholarships to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to students from Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.
The Jacobson Endowed Memorial Scholarship, established by Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Jacobson in loving memory of Mr. Jacobson’s parents, Thomas and Bertha Jacobson. To be awarded on the basis of academic ability and financial need. Preference to be given to students preparing themselves for Christian service.
The Thomas F. and Frances M. James Scholarship, established for qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Henry and Josephine Jansen Memorial Scholarship, established by Margaret J. Baker in memory of her father and mother Henry and Josephine Jansen to provide scholarships for students in need of financial assistance for tuition, books, room, and board.

The Erik Paul Nils Johnson Scholarship, established in memory of Erik Johnson ’94, to be awarded to a qualified full-time student who is recognized as a seeker, able and fearless enough to address difficult questions and ideas regarding our human relationship with God, good and evil, ethics, and faith.
The Glen M. and Kathryn L. Johnson Scholarship, established by Glenn ’70 and Kathryn ’71 Johnson, to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The Leon A. and Anna S. Johnson Endowed Scholarship, awarded to qualified students from Stevens or Pope County in Minnesota or, if none, to students from the state of Minnesota, who can show evidence of financial need.
The Lois Valborg Jordahl Scholarship, established by Dr. Leigh D. Jordahl ’45 in memory of his wife Lois, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Gerald A. and Agnes M. Jorgenson Family Scholarship, in memory of Gerald Jorgenson, son James L. Jorgenson, and daughter Geraldine A. Jorgenson Rambo ’68, to be awarded on the basis of good academic standing and financial need.
The Erling S. Kaasa Scholarship, to be awarded to meritorious students in need of financial assistance.
The John and Karen Kerndt Family Scholarship was established to provide awards to students who can demonstrate financial need.
The Kilness Scholarship, established to honor the memory of Kilness family members who stressed higher education in the early 1900s, to be awarded to qualified Christian students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Kintzinger Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who exhibited academic excellence and leadership in high school with first preference to students from Grinnell, Iowa; Sisters, Ore.; and Klamath Falls, Ore.
The C. Dean and Elsie L. Kittleson Family Scholarship, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to qualified students who have served on the staff at Camp EWALU, Strawberry Point, Iowa.
The Kenneth A. Klingsheim Memorial Scholarship, provided in Kenneth Klingsheim’s memory by Shirley Klingsheim Bentdahl through the estate of their parents, Arthur and Amelia Klingsheim, to be awarded to graduates of Fillmore Central High School, Harmony, Minnesota. If there are none, preference shall be given to students from rural southeastern Minnesota.
The Koch-Cannestra Family Scholarship, established in honor of Richard and Marlene Koch and Frank and Rita Cannestra, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need.
The U.V. and Paul Koren Scholarship, established by the members of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in recognition of their connection to Luther College as a founding congregation. To be awarded to students from the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church congregation, or, if none, then awards shall be made to students from Winneshiek County.
The Kraabel Family Scholarship, established to honor Anton T. and Mary Kraabel and to recognize A.T. Kraabel’s service to North Dakota as a state representative, senator, and lieutenant governor. Awards shall be made to qualified students with need for financial assistance, with preference to students from North Dakota, and then to students who are in the first generation of their family to attend college.
The David and Camille Kundert Leadership Scholarship, established in honor of David and Camille Kundert, to be awarded to a qualified student who can show evidence of financial need.
The Amanda O. Langemo Scholarship, established by the estate of Amanda Langemo to be awarded to worthy students.
The Edward N. and Lorraine E. Larson Family Fund provides scholarship assistance for four years to students who demonstrate intelligence and scholarship and possess an active and sincere Christian character. Students who hold this scholarship are designated as the Larson Family Scholars at Luther.
The Oscar and Betha Larson Endowed Scholarship, established by O. Dale Larson in honor of his parents, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Robert H. Lee Endowed Scholarship, established by the family of Robert H. Lee, to be awarded to students who are not residents of Iowa with priority given to students who graduated from Hudson Senior High School, Hudson, Wisconsin., and if none, preferably students from Wisconsin.
The George and Minnie Leistikow Scholarship, to be awarded to seniors with a strong record of academic performance planning to enter the field of education who can show evidence of need for financial assistance. Students need not be education majors.
The Malinda Letsch Scholarship, established for needy and deserving students.
The Anna (Storaasli) Lionberger Memorial Scholarship, established by Paul H. and R. Justine Lionberger to honor the memory of Paul’s mother who dedicated years of service in the Luther College Food Service. Awards are based on financial need, and the demonstrated qualities of leadership volunteerism in society.
The R. Justine and Paul H. Lionberger Scholarship was established in memory of Rev. Hans B. Thorgrimsen, Class of 1879. Hans organized the Luther College Concert Band and served as it's director from 1878-1879. The scholarship shall be awarded to students who are participating in some music organization on campus.
The Richard and Elaine Looft Scholarship, established by Jim and Martha Looft, in memory of Jim’s parents, to be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance.
The Robert H. and Muriel C. Lounsberry Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified rural Iowa students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Loven-Zeman Family Scholarship, established in memory of Betty (Zeman) Peterson Schneider by Juanita (Zeman) Loven and Russell Loven; to be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance with preference given to students from Jackson County, WI, Winneshiek, Allamakee, or Clayton counties in Iowa, non-traditional students, and students majoring in education.
The Lawrence and Betty Lubben Scholarship, in honor of the sacrifices made by Lawrence and Betty Lubben to enable their sons to be the first generation to attend college in the United States. Robert, David, and Gary Lubben have established this scholarship to provide support to students who represent the first generation from their family to attend college in America.
The Luther College Woman’s Club Scholarship, awarded to first-year students and continued for the four consecutive years that the students are in attendance at Luther, provided the students maintain 3.0 grade point averages. Candidates must demonstrate a need for financial assistance and rank in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.
The Luther Community Scholarship, established in honor of all Luther students by the college faculty and staff, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Lutheran Brotherhood Fund for Lutheran Students, established to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving Lutheran students.
The Mabe’s Pizza Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by Mabel White in recognition of her many years of association with the students, faculty, and staff of Luther College. Recipients must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
The John A. Maclay Scholarship, established in memory of John Maclay by Susan Maclay Blackman and Paul Blackman. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students with need for financial assistance with preference given to students majoring in art; if none, awards shall be given to students majoring in another aspect of the humanities.
The R. Clark Mallam Memorial Scholarship in Anthropology, established to honor Professor Mallam’s contributions to Luther College, this scholarship shall be awarded to a student majoring in anthropology with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Christopher Martinat Memorial Scholarship, established by classmates and friends of the Martinat family, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Paul R. and Miri K. Mattson Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance. Preference shall be given to international students or students who are members of Hosanna Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Vera W. Mayer Scholarship Fund, awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.
The Midwest Benefits, Inc. Scholarship, established by Loren and Sue Kiel, to be awarded to dependents of employees of Midwest Benefits, Inc. and then to other qualified students based on merit.
The Edward C. and Constance M. Miller Family Scholarship, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Dr. Dale V. and Barbara Moen Scholarship, established in honor and recognition of Dale ’35 and Barbara Moen’s service to Shell Lake area, Wisconsin and to their life-long loyalty to Luther College to be awarded to students from the Shell Lake area or the State of Wisconsin.
The Harlan T. Moen Memorial Scholarship, established for above average academic performance students with financial need. Preference shall be given to students from Cherokee County, Iowa, if available; otherwise to students from the Midwest.
The Duane R. Monette Scholarship, established through a bequest from the estate of Duane R. Monette, to be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance.
The Tom and Ann Monson Family Scholarship, established by Tom ’77 and Ann ’78 Monson to be awarded to worthy and deserving students.
The Don R. Moore Memorial Scholarship, established by friends and family in loving memory of Don R. Moore, who dedicated his life to teaching and coaching. Awards shall be given to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to education majors with interest in coaching.
The Ruth Mostrom Scholarship for International Students, to be awarded to qualified international students with demonstrated need for financial assistance.

The Casper B. and Nora J. Nervig Scholarship, in honor of the education provided to four generations of the Nervig family, to be awarded to junior or senior students who have maintained a minimum of a 3.00 grade point average.
The Chip and Jari Norris Endowed Leadership Scholarship to be awarded to qualified students who have maintained a 3.0 GPA and a demonstrated community leadership and service in high school.
The Neal and Gerry Nottleson Scholarship, established by Neal and Gerry Nottleson to provide scholarships for high need students who are Regent Scholars at Luther.
The Marvin T. Nystrom Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to junior or senior students in any academic discipline in the sciences and humanities. These recipients must be U.S. citizens, show evidence of need for financial assistance, and have grade point averages of 3.00 (B average).
The Anders Christian Olsen and Anna Reisetter Olsen Scholarship, established by Anna Margrethe Olsen, to be awarded to needy and worthy students for education, research, and advancement of learning.
The Clifford O. Olson Memorial Scholarship, established by the estate of Ella L. Olson in memory of her husband, Clifford Olson, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.

The Uwe Jens Rudolf Accounting Scholarship, established to honor Professor Rudolf for his dedicated service to the college, to be awarded to a full-time accounting major, approaching the completion of the junior year of study, with a demonstrated record of student scholarship, career development, or leadership activities.
The Karl Runde Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Karl Runde by his family, to be awarded to students from Dubuque Senior High School, Dubuque, Iowa, with preference given to students who have earned the Eagle Scout Award.
The Leland and Ina Sabby Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The St. John Lutheran Church Scholarship, established through the memorials and bequests of faithful members of St. John Lutheran Church, Bellevue, Iowa, with preference to benefit students from this congregation.
The Jacob and Tina Sand Memorial Scholarship, established by Mr. and Mrs. Oliver C. Sand and daughter, Juanita, to be awarded to needy foreign students.
The Sartell, Minnesota, Area Scholarship, established by Alan Duane and Heidi Koukkari Reitz, to be awarded to a student from Sartell, Minn. If none, the scholarship shall be awarded to a student from the Benton/Stearns County, Minn., area.
The Harold K. Savre Scholarship, established by Robert H. Savre in memory of his father Harold K. Savre, Class of 1924, and his grandfather B.K. Savre, Class of 1896, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance. Preference shall be given to upper-class students majoring in mathematics, or upper-class students majoring or minoring in mathematics working toward a secondary education certificate.
The Edsel and Helen Schweizer Scholarship, established to honor Edsel and Helen for their dedication and service to Luther, to be awarded to a qualified male student who can show evidence of financial need with preference given to a student active in extracurricular activities.
The Mildred and Vernon Serfling Endowed Scholarship, established by Vernon Serfling to be awarded to students from farm families in Fillmore County, Minnesota who show evidence of need for financial assistance. If no farm families are available, the scholarship shall be awarded to students from Fillmore County.
The Sersland-Nelson Family Scholarship, established to provide awards to students who demonstrate need, with preference given to students from the Newton, Iowa, area.
The Matthew A. Schwendeman Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Matthew Schwendeman to be awarded to transfer students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance with preference given to students who are transferring to Luther from Northeast Iowa Community College.
The Richard L. and Margaretha Sheppard Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with first preference given to Asian-American students.
The Sadie Simonson Memorial Art Scholarship, to be awarded to students majoring in art prior to their junior or senior years.
The Pastor Roger and Marilyn Skatrud Scholarship, established by the members of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church to celebrate the 39 years of parish ministry, music, and servant leadership by Rev. Roger Skatrud ’57 and his wife, Marilyn ’58. Preference is to be given to members of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; if none, preference should be given to students pursuing study leading to full-time service in the church or in music.
The T. Albon and Gladys E. Sordahl Scholarship, established by Tex A. Sordahl ’73 in memory of his parents, to be awarded to students from Viroqua, Wisconsin, on the basis of academic merit. If no students from Viroqua are available, the geographic area may be expanded to Vernon County, then to southwestern Wisconsin.

The Knute D. and Cathinka P. Stalland Scholarship, established, in part with a bequest from Karl H. Brunsdale, to provide awards for male students on the basis of academic record and need.
The John Iron Stearns Scholarship, established by the estate of Gretchen Stearns in memory of her son John. To be awarded to students from Stonington-Deer Isle High School, Stonington, Maine, with preference given to students interested in art, music, or pre-medical studies.
The Olai and Caroline Steen Scholarship, established by Mr. and Mrs. Olai Steen of Clinton, Minnesota, to be awarded to students who have demonstrated high levels of academic achievement, religious leadership, and Christian commitment.
The Maynord I. Steensgard Education Scholarship, to be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to students majoring in elementary or secondary education.
The Halberta Steensland Endowed Scholarship, established Halberta Steensland in memory of her father Morten, to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.
The Genevieve E. Stelberg Award, to be awarded to students who are selected on the basis of personal motivation rather than on high academic achievement or extreme financial need.

The Phillip Stoltenberg Scholarship, established by an anonymous donor to honor the memory of Phillip Stoltenberg’s contribution to education, to be awarded to junior or senior students planning to enter the teaching profession.

The Tim and Carol Barth Stoddard Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The William and Muriel Stoneman Family Scholarship, established by the Stoneman family to be awarded to qualified students who demonstrate character, church and school involvement, and leadership abilities.
The Helen A. Strand Scholarship was established by Marilyn Bohl in honor of Helen Strand's work and dedication to the education department at Luther College. The scholarship shall be awarded to students in need of financial assistance with the intention to build and support a diverse student population. A secondary preference shall be given to students graduating from Coachella High School in Coachella, CA.
The Strandjord Scholarship Fund shall be awarded to qualified students majoring in the sciences or education who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Rev. and Mrs. E.I. Strom Scholarship, established by the estate of Solveig Zell to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance.

The Sterling and Vila Thompson Scholarship, to be awarded to students who show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to male students majoring in elementary education.
The Jonathan Daniel Thurmer Memorial Scholarship, provides assistance to students with good academic standing and promise of success in their chosen field. Given by his family, the memorial remembers Jonathan Thurmer’s cheerful and loving short life.
The Henry S. Tollefson Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students in need of financial assistance with preference given to students from rural areas.
The Martin and Esther Tollund Memorial Scholarship, established to increase the number of students from Mt. Horeb (Wis.) High School to attend Luther, to be awarded to first-year students who have graduated from Mt. Horeb High School. If none, the award will be divided between upper class students, if any.
The John W. Torgelson Scholarship, established in memory of John Torgelson ’50 to be awarded to qualified students in need of financial assistance.
The Osul and Martha Torrison Scholarship, established by the Torrison families as a memorial to Osul and Martha Torrison, pioneer settlers of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to be awarded to needy and worthy students from the Manitowoc area.
The Jerry and Barbara Twedt Scholarship was established in honor of Jerry's 50th class reunion to be awarded to students in need of financial assistance who are majoring in Theatre.
The John Norman Urness Memorial Scholarship, established by the estate and heirs of his wife Helen Fowler Urness, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Theodore and Esther Vagts Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by and in memory of Theodore and Esther Vagts, to provide scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic ability and financial need.
The Mary E. Clegg Vanderwalker Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Earl C. Vanderwalker in memory of his wife, for students majoring in communications, with evidence of financial need as a requirement.
The Voltmer Scholarship, provided for qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to dependents of employees of the Voltmer Corporation. If there are none, recipients shall be deserving students from Iowa or Minnesota.

The Raymond E. and Marilyn Wahlberg Scholarship, established in appreciation of the education two of their children received at Luther and in recognition of Ray Wahlberg’s service to Luther as vice president and general counsel from 1984-97. The Matthew Charles Watson Memorial Scholarship, established in loving memory of Matthew
Charles Watson, who was a member of the class of 2000, by his parents, John D. and Susanne K. Watson, to be awarded for three years to a member of the class of 2000 on the basis of economic need and leadership involvement in a faith community.
The Wicks Construction, Inc., Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Allan and Janenne Wicks, founders of Wicks Construction, to be awarded to the dependent children of Wicks Construction, Inc., employees or students with an interest in protecting the environment.
The Wicks-England Family Scholarship, established to acknowledge the strong leadership and many years of service of Russell M. Wicks on the Luther College Board of Regents and the long-time relationship between the Wicks-England families and Luther College, to benefit students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Erling and Margaret Barth Wold Scholarship, established in celebration of Margaret Barth Wold’s fiftieth anniversary of graduation from Luther College, for students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Arlo D. and Agnes K. Woolery Scholarship, to be awarded each year to a graduate of Lake Mills High School, Lake Mills, Iowa. Recipients must meet all normal admissions standards at Luther College and choice shall be based upon the following considerations: academic excellence, participation in extra-curricular activities, athletic achievement, and demonstrated leadership qualities.
The World War II Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of those Luther College men and women who served in World War II, with special tribute to those who gave their lives for this country. Awards shall be given to qualified students with financial need, with preference given to students who are direct descendants of Luther graduates who served during World War II.
The J. Wilhelm Ylvisaker Memorial Scholarship honors Luther’s fifth president, who served from 1948 to 1962. Established with a bequest from Karl H. Brunsdale, this scholarship assists worthy students annually.
The J. Wilhelm and Lucille Ylvisaker Endowed Scholarship, established by James W. Ylvisaker to honor his parents, to be awarded to students with demonstrated financial need, who show superior intelligence and scholarship, and who seem to possess an active and sincere Christian character.
The James N. and Jodi Palma Young Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
