The following awards, for upperclass students, recognize educational achievement:
The Dr. Evelyn R. Barritt Award for Excellence in Nursing, established by Evelyn Barritt to honor her father, to be given to an outstanding senior nursing student at the Pinning Ceremony.
The Frank R. Barth Prize in the Department of Economics and Business, established by Frank R. and Marjorie Barth to be awarded to acknowledge academic performance and/or future potential to students majoring in economics, accounting, and management.
The Marjorie Barth Prize in the Department of Art, established by Frank R. and Marjorie Barth to be awarded to acknowledge academic performance and/or future potential to students majoring in art.
The Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Prize for Opera Performance is given annually to a student in recognition of outstanding vocal performance and promise of an operatic career.
The Herman E. Ellingson Memorial Prize in Physics, established by Sam Legvold ’35, to be given to outstanding junior physics majors. Herman E. Ellingson ’24, was a professor at Luther, and later made ingenious contributions to the sonar capabilities of the United States Navy.
The Daryl and Audrey Erdman Prize for Entrepreneurship is awarded to students who, through their own creative initiative, were able to earn the matching funds through some entrepreneurial endeavor.
The Richard C. and Joann M. Hemp Family Prize for Orchestra Performance, established by Richard and Joann Hemp, to be awarded annually to rising seniors who are members of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, with additional preference given to other members of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra based upon financial need.
The Ida M. Fosso and Olaf J. Fosso Prize, awarded by the history department to the best student essay on any topic in American History.
The Iowa Society of CPAs provides awards to outstanding senior accounting majors.
The Brianne Lee Spanish Award, established in honor of Brianne Lee ’78, to be awarded to senior students majoring in Spanish at Luther College and who have demonstrated the highest standards of excellence in both language and overall studies.
The David O. Lomen Award in Mathematics, established in honor of David O. Lomen '59, to be awarded to an outstanding junior or senior student(s) majoring in mathematics.
The I. B. McGladrey Accountancy Award, established by McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn & Company, Certified Public Accountants, Davenport, Iowa, to be awarded annually by this firm to the accounting major with the highest average and promise for professional success.
The Karl H. and Anna B. Nordgaard Memorial Nursing Award, to be awarded to a senior nursing student who has demonstrated high standards of excellence within the nursing program with preference given to students with financial need.
The Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying & Collaborative Keyboard Performance Award, shall be awarded to sophomore and junior students as determined by a competitive audition.
The Carl W. Strom Memorial Prize in Mathematics, established by Sam Legvold ’35, to be given to outstanding junior mathematics majors. Dr. Carl W. Strom ’19, was a professor at Luther and later had a distinguished career as a diplomat, rising to the rank of ambassador.
The Edward O. Thorland Memorial Prize in Computer Science, established by the Thorland family, former students and friends, to be given to outstanding junior computer science majors. Dr. Thorland ’64, became the computer center director in 1970 and was largely responsible for the establishment of the computer science major in 1975.
