My Spring Break was awesome and I got to improve my German significantly as I was with my host family for the entire duration and without internet to contact any of my American friends/family. :) I travelled with my host family to Stuttgart for part of my Spring Break. After making a side trip to Köln on the way, we arrived at our destination. The drive from Münster to Stuttgart is beautiful as one can see the countryside go from flat to hillier with all the small German towns nestled between the hills, each with a church steeple.
In Stuttgart, we stayed with some family friends and got to explore various parts of the city, as well as make a day trip to Konstanz (Constance in English). As my host family has small children, we visited the Stuttgart Zoo the first day. It was quite large and very pretty with a lot of beautiful flowers and exotic animals. We traveled to Konstanz the next day. There we saw the beautiful Bodensee. We weren't able to see the Alps very well because it was rather cloudy that day and the mountains were somewhat hidden, but it was amazing to be able to see Switzerland and Austria. During the course of the day, we walked through the city with all its beautiful buildings and sights and finished off our trip by stopping by a church that I have always really wanted to see: Hillsong Church Germany. It was an amazing experience and probably my favorite day of Spring Break. The next day, I was able to go shopping at an outlet town with Silvia and her friend. At one point on the drive, we were at a significantly higher altitude and got to see a beautiful view of the city of Stuttgart. The last day of our time in Stuttgart was more of a low key day where we stayed at home and got some errands done.
I found Easter weekend to be very exciting here in Germany. On the Saturday night before Easter, I got to go with my host dad to the Catholic mass organized by the St. Petrikirche here in Münster. It was a beautiful service. To begin we made a procession, and walked from church to church with lit candles. We finished off the service by congregating in the St. Petrikirche, which was only lit by candlelight for the majority of the evening. It was very beautiful.
Easter Sunday was amazing, as well, and I found out that they do egg hunts here in Germany too!
To end the break, my family and I went hiking in the "Münster Bergen" (mountains of Münster) and finished the day by climbing a tower there and being greeted by a beautiful view of Münster and the surrounding countryside.
I don't hesitate to say that my Spring Break was truly awesome! Not only did I get to see some other parts of Germany that I had always wanted to see, but I got to improve my German significantly and got to know my host family better. This trip and these times are something that I will never forget!
