Sheppard lived in Nebraska for several years, earning recognition as "Secondary Art Teacher of the Year" and "2000 Nebraska Teacher Achievement Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching" from the Peter Kiewit Foundation. He holds a master of arts degree from the University of Nebraska and was the first teacher in Nebraska to receive National Board Certification in secondary art. He currently lives in Decorah, Iowa.
"Many of the works in this show are abstract patterns suggestive of the treeless plains of central and western Nebraska known as the Sandhills, but they are not representations of specific landscapes. These pieces are more minimal in appearance than previous work even though they are more labor intensive."
