After opening its season with three road matches, the Luther women’s tennis team finally had the opportunity to compete on its home courts hosting Upper Iowa University. The Norse grabbed an early advantage in doubles, but were unable to hold the lead as the Peacocks fought back to earn a hard fought 5-4 victory.
Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson continued their strong play with an (8-3) win at No. 2 doubles over Nicole Pothen and Vicky Kulbokas. Jenna Myers and Olivia Heitz were also (8-3) winners, defeating Paige Olson and Kelly Jachynowski at No. 3. Upper Iowa tallied its first point of the day when Iris Verweig and Saki Kowabata beat Luther’s Maggie Helms and Caroline Treis at No. 1.
The Norse picked up points at the bottom of the singles lineup where Heitz and Lauren Welch played their way to straight set victories. Welch was impressive in her varsity debut, tallying a (6-2, 6-1) win over Alexa Harrington at No. 6 in decisive fashion. Heitz won her match (6-3, 6-3) against Kulbotas in the fifth slot. Meanwhile, Upper Iowa continued to be tough at the top of the lineup where Verweig rolled past White-Baer (6-0, 6-1) at No. 1. Pothen was also a (6-0, 6-1) victor against Treis at No. 3.
The final two singles matches on court were tightly contested, but the Norse were unable to pick up a fifth point. Myers lost (6-4, 6-4) to Olson at No. 4 before Adriana DePaolis dropped a (7-5, 7-5) decision to Kowabata at No. 2 in the last match of the meet.
