|Date:||April 14, 2013|
The Luther College men’s tennis team picked up a key victory over regionally ranked Grinnell at Blackhawk Tennis Club in Waterloo, Iowa. The two teams started with singles play due to court availability, and the Norse came away with five of the six points. Luther added a pair of doubles victories before the final doubles match was called before finishing, resulting in a 7-1 victory for the Norse.
Ramesh Karki was even with Elliot Czarnecki at No. 1 singles in the early going, but pulled away for a (6-3, 6-1) victory to put the Norse on the board. Nick Mozena held off a late charge from Emilio Gomez at No. 2, winning (6-1, 6-4) to make it 2-0 in favor of Luther.
The Norse also picked up a trio of close wins to clinch the team victory. Torstein Jystad won by a break in each set to defeat Charlie Wilhelm (6-4, 6-4) at No. 5. James Ayer battled back and forth with Tracy Johnson and pulled out two consecutive tie-breakers to earn a (7-6, 7-6) win. Matt Bellio tallied the fifth point by holding off CJ Ray at No. 3, winning (6-4, 6-7, (10-8)) to secure the match for the Norse. Quinn Foley also played into a deciding third set super tie-breaker, but came out on the wrong end of a (4-6, 6-0, (10-8)) result against Aaron Lapkin.
Mozena and Ayer notched an (8-5) win at No. 2 doubles over Tracy and Colin Johnson to make it 6-1. Bellio and Sean Brown were (8-6) winners over Ray and Benjamin Charney at No. 3 to close out the scoring. Karki and Foley led Czarnecki and Gomez by a 6-5 score when the match was halted with the Pioneer duo preparing to serve.
Luther moves within one match of leveling its record, currently sitting at 8-9 this season while remaining 1-1 in the IIAC. The Norse will host Central and Wartburg on Saturday, April 20.
