Luther defeated St. Olaf College 20-13 this afternoon in front of an estimated crowd of over 2300 in Carlson Stadium. The win was the first for Head Coach Aaron Hafner. The victory not only snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Oles in this series that dates back to 1921, but also snapped the Oles string of 20 consecutive victories over non-conference opponents that dated back to 2004.
With the score tied 13-13, Rich Vickers blocked a St. Olaf punt that was recovered by the Norse on the Oles 20-yard line with 5:54 remaining in the game. On the very next play, Josh Vos scored on a 20-yard scamper that proved to be the game winning touchdown. The touchdown was the second for Vos on the afternoon who rushed for a career high 142 yards on 23 carries.
Luther tied the game at 13-13 late in the third quarter. Nathan Bloechl engineered all but two playes of the 16-play, 85 yard drive that ended with a one-yard plunge by Bloechl. Bloechl took over at quarterback for JJ Sirios who was injured on the second play of the drive.
The Norse defensive unit also played well forcing three St. Olaf fumbles and picking off quarterback Nate Penz twice. Penz was also sacked three times. Eric Pittman picked off a pass midway through the fourth quarter, while Cody Berger ended the Oles last chance drive with an interception on Luther's own six-yard line with 38 ticks left on the clock.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 1-1. The Norse will travel to Wheaton College (IL) next week for a game that is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
