Luther won its season opener here in the Regents by a score of 72-70 over previously unbeaten UW-La Crosse. The Eagles entered tonight's contest 3-0 and gave the home team a scare after trailing the Norse by 14 points at the half.
Trailing 68-59 with 6:30 left in the game, The Eagles put together an 11-3 run iand pulled to within one point (71-70), following a Braden Tice three-pointer. The Eagles shot themselves back in the hunt for the lead connecting on 6-of-14 treys in the final 20 minutes of play. Tice, who led the Eagles with 21 points, was 5-of-7 from behind the three-point line.
Jake Martin connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 11 seconds left on the clock and John Androus collected the missed last second attempt by the Eagles as the buzzer sounded to seal the victory.
Androus led the Norse with 18 points and nine rebounds. Martin and Bradley Wilkins also tallied double digits with 11 points each. Eleven different players scored tonight.
The Norse will return to action this Friday and Saturday when they will travel to Arden Hills, Minn., for the Bethel University Perkins Tip-Off Tournament. The Norse will face Marian University (WI) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
