For the second straight time, the match came down to a few tie-breakers for the Luther men’s tennis team, but the Norse found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-3 score against Carleton, ranked No. 10 in the Central Region at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn.

Luther tallied its first point of the day at No. 1 doubles where Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley moved to 3-0 this spring with an impressive (8-3) victory over Carleton’s Paul Cooper and Andrew Hwang.  The Knights were winners at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles action.  Nick Mozena and James Ayer were unable to capitalize on some early break point opportunities and never got back into the match, falling (8-3) at No. 2 against Austin Jiang and Alex Chin.  Sean Brown and Torstein Jystad came close at No. 3 before dropping an (8-5) match to McCoy Becker and Erik Johnson.

After Chin beat Jystad (6-2, 6-2) at No. 4, Ayer responded with a (6-3, 4-6, (10-8)) super tie-breaker victory against Cooper at No. 5 to trim the Knight advantage to 4-2.  Carleton notched its fourth point with a (6-2, 6-3) win from Hwang over Luther’s Matt Bellio, but the Norse stayed in the hunt when Mozena knocked off Avery Rux (6-2, 2-6, (10-8)) at No. 2 to make it a 4-3 meet.

Karki had won his first set against Jiang at No. 1 in a tie-breaker, but had quickly dropped the second set and was headed to a deciding super tie-breaker.  Matt Knutson was also deadlocked in a tight match with Becker at No. 6.  After dropping the first set 6-4 and getting broke to go down 6-5 in the second, Knutson broke back to make it 6-6 and send the second set to a tie-breaker.  With the Norse needing to win the remaining tie-breakers to win the meet, Carleton responded with some clutch shots earning a (6-7 (5), 6-1, (10-4)) win at No. 1 and a (6-4, 7-6 (5)) at No. 6 to take home a 6-3 team victory.
