The Luther women’s tennis team opened its 2013 fall campaign with a pair of road matches on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Ill. Play was moved indoors due to inclement weather in the area. The Norse faced Wheaton in the first match of the day and dropped a 5-4 decision to the Thunder.
Things started well in doubles with the No. 3 tandem of Jenna Myers and Olivia Heitz scoring an (8-1) victory over Katherine Kaiser and Anna Barrett. Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson continued their momentum from last spring, notching an (8-4) win against Emily Jones and Erika Nelson at No. 2. Maggie Helms and Caroline Treis went up a break in the opening game and led 6-5 until the Thunder duo of Sarah Ray and Julie Buursma picked up a break of their own to level the match at 6-6. The teams then traded a pair of holds with Wheaton finally winning the last two games to earn a (9-7) win at No.1, giving the Norse a slim 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
Megan Wachholz outlasted Barrett in the first set at No. 6 singles before rolling to a (6-4, 6-1) win. Treis also won in straight sets, defeating Kaiser by a (6-3, 6-2) margin at No. 5. Meanwhile, the Thunder won the first set on the top four courts, taking the overall edge in the match. Wheaton closed out its first singles victory when Jones beat Luther’s Adriana DePaolis (6-2, 6-2) at No. 3. White-Baer dropped a (6-3, 6-3) decision to Ray at No. 1 while Helms’ second set rally fell just short in a (6-3, 6-4) loss to Buursma at No. 2. Myers rallied back to split sets at No. 4 before falling (6-4, 2-6, 6-2) to Nelson in the deciding match.
