The Luther women’s tennis team continued its challenging spring schedule with a match against St. Olaf on Friday, March 15 at the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center in Owatonna, Minn. The Norse rallied to grab an early lead in doubles before the Oles came back to win four of the six singles matches, earning a 5-4 victory over Luther.
St. Olaf jumped out to quick leads at all three doubles positions, going ahead 4-1 with two breaks at No. 1, 3-1 with one break at No. 2, and 3-1 with one break at No. 3. Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley kept fighting, but ended up on the short end of an (8-5) result to Kristi Kroker and Maya MacGibbon at No. 2, giving the Oles an early 1-0 advantage. Elise Allen and Maggie Helms made a big comeback at No. 1, taking a 5-4 lead by winning four straight games. The Norse duo came through with another service break in the final game of the match, picking up an (8-6) victory over Alisa Hall and Julia Ellis. Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson broke right back at No. 3 after going down 3-1 and later added another service break on the way to an (8-5) win over Caitlin Owsley and Andrea Jumes.
The match was tied up again at 2-2 after St. Olaf won at No. 2 singles. Whiteley made a late run at No. 5 before falling (6-0, 6-4) to Bailey Kent, putting the Oles back in front, 3-2. Allen battled at No. 1 against Hall with Hall pulling away in the second set for a (6-4, 6-1) victory.
Trailing 4-2, the Norse needed wins in the final three matches to pull out the team victory. Jenna Myers kept the Norse in it with a (6-4, 6-2) victory over Erin Hynes at No. 6. Lindstrom then leveled the match at 4-4 with an impressive (6-3, 6-3) win against MacGibbon at No. 4. Helms and Kroker went back and forth at No. 3 with Kroker finally edging out Helms for a (6-4, 6-3) win to clinch the match.
The Norse are now 10-4 overall this season. The team will resume competition in Orlando, Fla., on the squad’s annual spring trip March 25-29.
