The Luther women’s tennis team was back in action after returning from its spring trip in Orlando, facing off with another quality opponent this spring. The Norse faced the Thunder from Wheaton College at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn., and dropped a 7-2 decision. Luther held a 2-1 edge after doubles, but was unable to garner any more points in singles action.
After Wheaton collected a victory at No. 2 doubles, Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson opened the scoring for the Norse with an (8-5) win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Lauren Schlabach and Erika Nelson, improving to 5-0 this spring as a tandem. Elise Allen and Maggie Helms trailed Sarah Ray and Julie Buursma by a 5-1 score at No. 1 doubles before mounting a dramatic comeback, eventually winning (9-8 (6)) in a tie-breaker to put Luther ahead 2-1 going into singles.
Allen and Helms had the closest matches in singles, both falling in third set super tie-breakers. Allen dropped a (6-3, 3-6, (10-7)) decision to Ray at No. 1. Helms lost her match (6-4, 2-6, (10-2)) to Schlabach at No. 3. The Thunder won the other four singles matches in straight sets.
Luther is now 14-7 overall this season. The Norse are back in action on Sunday, April 21 against Augustana-Rock Island. It will be the fourth match of the spring against an opponent from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). Luther has wins over Carthage and Elmhurst in addition to the loss to Wheaton.
