Luther sits atop the Iowa Conference standings after sweeping Buena Vista University this afternoon in Storm Lake. The Norse won three of four games in the conference opening weekend for both clubs. This afternoon, the Norse defeated the Beavers 4-2 and 6-2.
In game one, Luther scored four runs on nine hits and Matt McKinney picked up his first win of the season on the mound. McKinney (1-1) threw 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits. Alec Knop (2) was credited with the save, striking out four of the 12 batters he faced in relief.
Aldon Severson and Matt Larson drove in two runs each. Severson was 2-for-2 and Larson was 3-for-3. Mitch Knippenberg also tallied multiple hits going 2-for-3.
Eric Pittman (3-5), Andrew Nelson (3-5), Aldon Severson (2-4), Thomas Weber (2-3) and Lowe (2-4) led the offensive attack. Nelson, Knippenberg and Severson each drove in a run.
Blake Peterson (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win. Peterson allowed two runs on six hits in eight full innings of work.
The two victories gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 3-1, 7-5 overall. Buena Vista fell to 1-3, 7-7 overall.
Luther returns to action April 5-6 when it is scheduled to host Coe College. Both Friday and Saturday's double headers will begin at 1:00 p.m. Both double headers will also be video streamed.
