The Luther women’s tennis team opened its spring schedule with a double header at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday, March 9 in Winona, Minn. The Norse started with a match-up against the UW-La Crosse Eagles, a team that had defeated Luther by a 5-4 margin each of the last two seasons.
Annie Whiteley and Hailey Johnson paired together for the first time at No. 2 and closed out the match in impressive style, tallying an (8-5) win over Kimmy Mrozek and Rachael Wabers. The Eagles tallied victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to grab a 2-1 advantage heading to singles action.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets with Maggie Helms and Whiteley scoring points for the Norse. Helms stepped up into the No. 2 slot and was a (6-1, 7-5) winner over Bryanne Blanton. Whiteley raced to a (6-0, 6-0) victory against Wabers at No. 6. Adriana DePaolis dropped her first set at No. 4 before rallying back to force a deciding third set super tie-breaker. The comeback came up just a few points short, as she dropped a (6-2, 4-6, (10-7)) decision to Kendra Woyahn. UW-La Crosse also notched wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 to claim the victory.
