Semifinals - Luther 5, Wartburg 0
The Luther men’s tennis team opened the Iowa Conference Tournament with a semi-final match-up against Wartburg. The Norse entered play as the top seed while the Knights, seeded fifth, upset the fourth seeded Cornell Rams in the opening round.
Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki came out firing on all cylinders and easily dispatched Chris Buckingham and Josh Trueblood (8-0) at No. 1 doubles. Nick Mozena and James Ayer fell behind 1-3 at No. 2, but won the final seven games to secure an (8-3) victory over Brian Rasmussen and Dayton Stevens. Tyler Zinnecker and Quinn Foley trailed for much of the match at No. 3, but prevailed (9-8 (4)) against Eric Hilpert and Blayne Willadsen at No. 3, giving Luther a 3-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Luther won the first set at all six spots, but Sundstrom and Torstein Jystad came through with the first two wins to advance the Norse to the title match. Sundstrom was a (6-0, 6-2) winner over Buckingham at No. 1 while Jystad defeated Trueblood (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6.
Championship Match - Luther 4, Coe 5
After defeating Wartburg 5-0 in the first match of the day, the Luther men’s tennis team advanced to the championship match to face Coe, the No. 2 seed. The Kohawks beat Dubuque by a 5-1 score in the other semi-final match-up.
Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki once again got the Norse off to a positive start with an (8-2) victory against Noah Sprinkel and Sean Stokstad at No. 1 doubles. Coe evened the score at 1-1 with an (8-4) win from Curtis Newman and Victor Khristenko at No. 3 over Luther’s Tyler Zinnecker and Aaron Gendron. Nick Mozena and James Ayer fell behind 0-3 at No. 2, but quickly rebounded and won the final eight games for an (8-3) win.
Coe tied the match once again at 2-2 with a straight set victory at No. 6. Sundstrom put the Norse back in the lead with a (6-1, 6-4) victory over Sprinkel at No. 1. The matches at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 all ended around the same time with the Kohawks winning at No. 4 & No. 5 to even the match at 4-4. Nick Mozena tallied the fourth Luther point at No. 3 with a (6-3, 6-4) win against Stokstad. Karki edged Khristenko in the opening set, but lost the second set and eventually fell (6-7, 6-1, 6-4) in the deciding match.
Luther completes its season at 22-7 overall.
