Luther won its third game in a row and most importantly its Iowa Conference opener, defeating Loras 63-54 in the Regents Center. Trailing 24-25 at halftime, the Norse blistered the nets for 60 percent in the second frame en route to the victory. The win also snapped the Duhawks five-game win streak, as well as a nine-game win streak over the Norse dating back to Jan. 23, 2008.
Defensively, Luther held Loras to 38.5 percent from the field and won the battle of the boards 36-28.
Four Norse tallied double digits led by Nellie Nelson who posted a game high 20 points. Mullen Wacker, who was 10-of-11 from the free throw line, recorded a career high 14 points off the bench. Taylor Johnson and Meagan Koepnick chipped in 12 and 13 points respectively. Johnson led all rebounders with eight and also dished out a game high five assists.
Loras was led by Brit Kent with 11 and Niki Rivera with 10. Kelly Rogowski and Kaitlin Phillips both chipped in eight.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 9-3 while Loras fell to 10-2.
Luther returns to action at home on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when it will host nationally ranked No. 16 Simpson College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. All of Luther's home games are video streamed.
