The Luther women’s tennis team polished off a perfect week by defeating Hope 6-3 on the final day of competition in Orlando, Fla. The Norse went 4-0 for the week and improved to 15-7 overall.
It was a battle of ranked opponents in the Central Region with Hope entering the contest at No. 15 and the Norse close behind at No. 17. A doubles sweep proved pivotal as the two teams would go on to split the six singles matches. Katy Lindstrom and Elise Allen tallied the first point at No. 3, holding off Hannah Schultz and Andrea Pickelman. Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer followed by fighting off three break points in the final game to win (8-6) against Mallory Smith and Shelby Schultz at No. 2. Cami Czech and Katie Howe won a key point at No. 1 by coming back from a 3-6 deficit to win (9-8 (4)) over Carli Capestany and Leah LeBarge.
White-Baer completed an 8-0 week by defeating Shelby Schultz (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4 to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Norse. Chalhoub beat Casey Baxter (6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 to clinch the match and Elise Allen won (7-5, 6-2) over LeBarge at No. 2 to give Luther its sixth point. Hope finally got on the board when Capestany beat Czech (4-6, 6-3, (10-4)) in a battle of regionally ranked players. Howe lost (7-6 (1), 7-5) to Smith at No. 5 and Lindstrom dropped a (7-5, 1-6, (10-7)) decision to Melissa Bieri at No. 6.
Luther will now travel to Madison, Wis., to play in the Midwest Invite on April 6-7. The Norse open against Chicago, top ranked in the Central Region, and Gustavus, No. 5 in the Central Region, on the first day of action.
