The Luther men’s tennis team won its third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Carthage in the opening match of the team’s spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., improving to 9-3 overall. The Norse saw eight players earn a win in a battle of regionally ranked foes.
The Norse, currently ranked No. 13 in the Central Region, jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles against Carthage, currently ranked No. 11 in the Central Region. Tyler Zinnecker and Aaron Gendron raced out to a 7-1 lead at No. 3 doubles and then held off a late charge from Alex McLean and Connor Moon to pick up an (8-4) victory. Nick Mozena and James Ayer won the final two games to break a 6-6 tie at No. 2 doubles, edging out Matt Whiteside and Nick Boomgarden for an (8-6) victory. Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki rallied from a 5-1 deficit at No. 1 doubles, but lost (9-8 (3)) to Jeff Lotz and Daneric Hazelman to give Carthage its first point.
Matt Bellio and Quinn Foley won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 to give Luther a 4-1 victory. Bellio beat Boomgarden (6-4, 6-1) and Foley defeated Brian Howes (6-2, 6-3). Sundstrom was also a straight set winner at No. 1, clinching the victory for the Norse with a (6-4, 6-1) decision against Lotz in a match-up of regionally ranked singles players. Ramesh Karki played a lengthy first set before pulling away for a (6-3, 6-0) decision against Hazelman at No. 2. Gendron prevailed (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) over McLean at No. 4. Mozena won his first set at No. 3, but dropped a (6-7, 6-0, (10-2)) decision to Whiteside at No. 3.
