Luther claimed at least a share of the 2012 regular season Iowa Conference Championships after sweeping Wartburg 8-0 (6) and 9-0 (5) this afternoon in Waverly. The league title is the second in a row for the Norse and third in the past six years, and seventh in school history. The wins also secured the No. 1 seed for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament which the Norse will host May 3-5.
In game one, Kelsey Kittleson and Lauran Snyder drove in three runs each. Kittleson hit a two-run home run in the fifth and Snyder hit a three-run shot in the sixth.
Becca Girvan (21-2) threw a one-hit shut out, her sixth shut out of the year. Girvan faced 22 batters, walked two and struck out nine.
Shari Huber, Mallory Broderick and Kelsey Rose all had multiple hit efforts at the plate. Huber was 3-for-3 from the lead-off slot and scored once. Broderick was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Rose (9-1), who went the distance in the circle, helped her cause by going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Rose allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two en route to her third shut out of the year.
The Norse have now won 10 in a row and have held opponents scoreless 40 consecutive innings, dating back to the final frame in the double header sweep of St. Mary's University on April 12.
The two wins today gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 13-1, 32-4 overall. Luther's 32 wins marks the sixth straight year the Norse have tallied 30-plus wins.
Luther wraps up the regular season schedule hosting Cornell College on Saturday. This double header will begin at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be video streamed.
