Day One Recap: For the 15th consecutive year, a Luther College Norse wrestler will be an All-American. Trent Flegel made the most of his first appearance at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Tournament earning All-America honors at 197 lbs. The junior won his opening match of the tournament coming from behind to defeat Musa De’Reese of Hunter 8-7 in sudden victory. After losing in the quarterfinals to Brad Baus of Augsburg, Flegel defeated Alex Coolidge of Cornell for the third time this year 10-6. Flegel will wrestle in Saturday morning’s consolation semifinals.
Three of the four Norse qualifiers advanced to the All-America round Friday night. At 285, Connor Herman lost to second seeded Chad Johnson of Augsburg 12-0. After rebounding with a victory over Patrick Walsh of Bridgewater State 7-4, Herman lost to Joey Giaramita of SUNY-Courtland by fall in 2:53. The freshman ends his season at 24-15.
Junior Kyle Windquist ended his first national tournament in a Norse singlet one match shy of being an All-America. Windquist began his day losing to the number seven seed Josh Malave of Mt. Union 5-2. He rebounded in the consolation round with an 11-6 victory over Josh Etzel of Washington and Jefferson before losing to Brian Bistis of SUNY Courtland in the All-America round 13-6. Windquist finished his season with a 31-11 record.
Sophomore Daniel Mendoza, who was making his second appearance at the national finale, was eliminated after two matches. Mendoza lost by fall in :44 in the first round to Nathanie Giorgio of Coast Guard Academy. In a close, hard-fought match in the consolation round, Sean Ambrocio of Concordia (WI) eliminated Mendoza 3-2. Mendoza ends his sophomore season with a 26-12 record.
Day Two Recap: Junior Trent Flegel finished his first NCAA III National Tournament with a sixth place finish. Flegel earned his way into the consolation semifinals this morning with a 7-3 decision over Reid Mosquera of Johns Hopkins. In the consolation semifinals, the second seed of the tournament Jared Myhrberg of SUNY-Courtland, pinned Flegel in :57. Flegel ended his tournament with a 5-3 loss to Nathan Schmitz, Concordia-Moorhead in the fifth place match.
The sixth place finish for Flegel was the highest finish in last two years for a Luther wrestler at the national tournament. Allyn Plattner, Jayson Swanson and Jason Pyle all finished sixth at the 2010 national finale. Flegel ends his first season at Luther after transferring from Muskegan Community College (MI) with a 32-10 record. Flegel was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) all-America in 2011.
