The Luther men’s tennis team got back on the winning track with a pair of victories on Saturday, March 3 in Pella, Iowa. The Norse faced the Simpson Storm in the opening match and walked away with an 8-1 win to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the IIAC.
Nick Mozena and James Ayer had a tight battle at No. 1 doubles with each team holding serve until the score was 6-6. Mozena and Ayer were then able to string together a break before holding serve to close out an (8-6) win against Alex Hook and Adam Summitt. The Norse cruised to (8-0) wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Quinn Foley and Sam Cychosz defeated Blake Billings and Jeff Armstrong at No. 2 while Matt Bellio and Matt Knutson beat Mike Rundle and Brandon Christensen at No. 3.
Bellio and Knutson also won easily in singles to clinch the match for the Norse. Bellio won (6-0, 6-0) over Armstrong at No. 4 while Knutson earned a (6-1, 6-0) win against Rundle. Cychosz played his first varsity singles match of the spring and scored a (6-0, 6-0) victory over Christensen at No. 6. Foley was a (6-2, 6-1) winner at No. 3 against Billings, and Ayer closed out a tight first set in a (7-5, 6-1) victory against Hook at No. 1. Torstein Jystad lost (7-5, 6-4) in a close match with Summitt at No. 2 to give Simpson its lone point of the match.
