No. 4 Luther holds a two-game lead in the Iowa Conference standings after sweeping Buena Vista University 1-0, 6-0 this afternoon in Decorah.
The story of the afternoon was the dominance of Norse pitcher Becca Girvan. Girvan, who was credited with both victories in the circle, at one point retired 28 consecutive Buena Vista batters. After walking BVU pitcher Chancey Wilcke in the first inning of game one, Grivan proceeded to retire the next 19 batter she faced en route to the one-hit shutout. In game two, she took over in the circle with two runners on and one out in the middle of the second frame and retired the next nine, before Jamie Webster reached base with a single up the middle. Webster's hit was only the second that Girvan allowed the entire afternoon.
Girvan (19-2) ended the week a perfect 5-0 and allowed just one run in league play.
Luther scored what proved to be the game winner in game one on a Buena Vista error with two runners on base. Morgan Franklin scored the game winner after starting the inning with a single to center field.
Alise Miller hit a three-run home run to left field. Lauran Snyder and Kelsey Kittleson also drove in runs in the third.
Kelsey Rose got the start in the circle and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings allowing four hits, walking two and striking out two.
The two wins gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 9-1, 28-4 overall. Buena Vista fell to 3-5 in league play, 13-11 overall.
The next six games will be on the road starting with a double header at University of Dubuque on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m.
