No. 5 Luther sits atop the Iowa Conference standings alone after sweeping No. 3 Coe this afternoon in Cedar Rapids. The Norse entered the twin bill tied with Simpson at 5-1, but Simpson split with Dubuque today in Dubuque and is now in second place with a mark of 6-2. Luther's two wins gives it a league leading record of 7-1.
Shari Huber started the third with a double down the left field line and two batter later Snyder singled to drive in the first run of the ball game. In the fourth, Abby Christian led off with a single down the left field line. Kayla Hatting pinch ran for Christian and scored on the double to left center by Weindruch.
Becca Girvan (15-2) pitched out of two bases loaded jams, one in the first and the last in the bottom of the seventh, en route to the victory. Girvan spread five hits, walked five and struck out 12.
Coe scored its lone run after Girvan hit a Coe batter with the bases loads. A ground out short to third with two outs ended the Kohawks efforts in the seventh.
The Norse exploded for 14 hits and defeated the Kohawks 11-2 in five inning in the nightcap. The Norse scored 10 unanswered runs after falling behind the Kohawks 2-1 after two innings.
Kelsey Weindruch and Loran Snyder led the attack driving in three runs each. Lead-off hitter Shari Huber was 3-for-3 and scored four times. Kelsey Rose, who got the start in the circle, was 2-for-3 with two RBI at the plate.
Girvan (16-2) took over in the top of the third and struck out six of the 10 batter she faced en route to the victory.
The two wins increased Luther's overall record to 24-4, while Coe is now 24-6. The Norse return to action on Thursday, April 12 when they will travel to St. Mary's University (MN) for a non-conference double header that will begin at 3:00 p.m.
