Four Norse qualified for the 2012 NCAA III National Championships and Luther placed third at the 60th annual Iowa Conference Championships. Luther, who finished sixth at last year's tournament, posted a point total of 123.5 good for third place. Wartburg was crowned the league champion with 193.5 and Coe was second with 157.
Kyle Windquist (141) and Trent Flegel (197) were conference runner-ups. Windquist was defeated by Wartburg's Kodie Silvestri by fall at 1:53 and two-time defending national champion Byron Tate of Wartburg defeated Flegel 23-8 by technical fall at 6:04, in the title bouts.
Daniel Mendoza (125) and Conner Herman (285) also qualified for the national championships thanks to third place finishes. Mendoza defeated Tim Hood of Cornell 3-2 and Herman posted a 2-1 decision over Cornell's Carl Gaul.
Evan Obert (133), Stephan De La Cruz (149) and Garrett Bonte (165) missed qualifying for the national finale by one match, all finishing fourth. The top three place winners in each weight class earned trips to the national tournament.
Obert, seeded sixth at 133, was defeated by the #2 Tigue Snider of Cornell 7-4. De La Cruz, also seeded sixth, lost a 3-1 decision to #5 Ryan Warcynski of Dubuque. Bonte, who was seeded fourth, was injured midway through the second period of his third place match. Wrestling with basically one arm he gave a gallant effort but was defeated by #3 Joseph Hambleton of Cornell 8-5.
Jayden DeVilbiss (174), Jarid Groth (184) both placed sixth and Dalton Brown (157) placed seventh.
The 2012 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted March 9-10 by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis.
