Luther lost a hard fought 56-52 decision to UW-Eau Claire this afternoon in the Regents Center. Four free throws by the Blugolds in the final minute of play not only broke the sixth tie of the ball game (52-52), but proved to be the difference down the stretch.
Luther led by as many as nine points with just over four minutes left the first frame, but Eau Claire managed to draw to within four points by halftime (32-29).
Despite shooting 22 percent in the second frame, the Norse were able to hold onto their lead until the eight minute mark, when a jumper by Arien Becker gave the Blugolds a 41-39 lead. During the final six minutes of action, the lead changed six times.
Taylor Johnson recorded her ninth double-double of the season. Johnson tallied 11 points and collected a game high 12 rebounds. Rachel Stenhaug also tallied 11 points and Nellie Nelson was credited with 10.
The Blugolds were led by Sarah Bingea with 15 and Courtney Lewis with 12.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 6-3, while Eau Claire improved to 5-5.
The Norse will play next week at the Oglethorpe Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 20-21. The Norse will face Howard Payne on Dec. 20 and Anderson (IN) on the 21st at 6:00 p.m.
