Men's Tennis - DePauw University
|Date:||February 25, 2012|
The Luther men’s tennis team gave nationally ranked DePauw quite the scare before falling 6-3 on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Greencastle, Indiana. The Norse won two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead and the final result was up in the air until the late stages of the match against a squad that is No. 16 in the nation and No. 4 in the Central Region.
After the Tigers cruised to an (8-0) win at No. 3 doubles, Luther tied things up with a big win at No. 1 doubles from Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki. The duo knocked off Sam Miles and Ben Kopecky by an (8-6) score. Miles and Kopecky are currently rated No. 2 in the Central Region and No. 8 in the nation. Nick Mozena and James Ayer paired up for the first time this spring season and won a tight match at No. 2 doubles to give the Norse a 2-1 edge heading into singles play. Mozena and Ayer were unable to convert a match point when they led 8-7, but then won the tie-breaker (9-8 (7-5)) to defeat David Moss and Reid Garlock.
DePauw moved back in front 4-2 with wins at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6, but the Norse were not done as Aaron Gendron picked up his biggest win of the season, beating Noah Swiler (7-6 (3), 7-5) at No. 4 to make it a 4-3 meet. Sundstrom also won his first set and had a few match points in the second set before finally dropping a (3-6, 7-5, (10-7)) match to Miles at No. 1. Moments before the super tie-breaker at No. 1, Karki fell (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) in a marathon battle to Kopecky at No. 2.
