After battling the region’s top ranked team, the Norse faced another formidable foe in the afternoon match with Gustavus. Although several of the match scores were much more competitive, the Norse were unable to get on the scoreboard in a 9-0 loss to the Gusties.
Cami Czech and Katie Howe almost pulled off an upset against a regionally ranked No. 1 doubles tandem, leading 7-4 before falling (9-7) to Megan Gaard and Laurel Krebsbach. Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer put together a solid match at No. 2 in an (8-4) loss to Alex Erickson and Mary Roop.
Katy Lindstrom won the first singles set of the tournament for the Norse, continuing her strong singles play from the morning. She ended up dropping her match against Roop at No. 6 in a third set super tie-breaker, (4-6, 6-2, (10-3). Czech played another excellent match against a rated opponent, narrowly being edged (6-4, 7-5) by Erickson at No. 1 singles. White-Baer lost (6-4, 6-3) in another tight match at No. 4 to Mallory Shellum.
With the pair of defeats, Luther moved into a bracket with Denison and Kenyon for the second day of the tournament. Both of those schools are also ranked regionally and Denison is No. 17 in the national poll.
