Men's Tennis - UW-La Crosse

The Luther men’s tennis team hosted a trio of matches on the day and opened with a 5-4 win over UW-La Crosse. The Norse won two of the three doubles matches and split the six singles matches to earn the victory.
Nick Mozena and James Ayer quickly jumped out to a two-break advantage at No. 2 doubles and coasted to an (8-2) decision over Vic Mirasola and Dante Pitera to put Luther ahead, 1-0. Tyler Zinnecker and Aaron Gendron were in a tight match at No. 3 doubles against Nick Skanavis and CJ Schwind that featured eight straight holds before the Norse duo pulled away with a couple late breaks of serve for an (8-4) win. The Eagles landed a point at No. 1 doubles with an (8-6) win by Nick Piotrowski and Peter Stadum over Luther’s Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki.
Quinn Foley controlled the action at No. 6, defeating Travis Murphy (6-0, 6-2) to make it a 3-1 contest. James Ayer followed with a (6-3, 6-1) decision over Skanavis at No. 4 as the Norse moved in front, 4-1. The last four matches all split sets and went into super tie-breakers with the visitors winning three of the four battles. Matt Bellio was first off, gutting out a (7-5, 5-7, (10-6)) decision against Mirasola to clinch the victory.
Ramesh Karki (No. 1), Nick Mozena (No. 2), and Torstein Jystad (No. 5) all rallied after losing the first set, but all three fell in the deciding third set. Karki dropped a (6-3, 6-7 (3), (10-3)) match to Piotrowski while Mozena narrowly fell (6-1, 3-6 (11-9)) to Stadum. Jystad fell (7-6 (3), 1-6, (10-3)) to Schwind.
