The Luther College men’s tennis team opened IIAC league play with an 8-1 victory over Wartburg as the two teams met in Mt. Vernon, Iowa on Saturday, February 18. The Norse nailed down wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles before sweeping the six singles matches.
Tyler Van Heest and James Ayer pulled away from a 3-3 tie and rattled off five straight games for an (8-3) win against Brian Rasmussen and Eric Hilpert at No. 2. Joe LaFountaine and Torstein Jystad opened with a service break and then grabbed a second one in the final game of an (8-5) victory against Blayne Willadsen and Dayton Stevens at No. 3. The Knights tallied an (8-4) win at No. 1 to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Norse heading into singles play.
Ramesh Karki made quick work of Rasmussen at No. 2, winning (6-2, 6-2) to earn his third consecutive singles win of the spring. Matt Bellio was also impressive at No. 5, taking the final 10 games while cruising to a (6-2, 6-0) win over Stevens. After dropping a few tight matches earlier this spring, Aaron Gendron stepped up with a (6-3, 6-3) victory to clinch the first conference match of the year for the Norse. Luther earned its final three points from Jystad (No. 4), Scott Sundstrom (No. 1), and Chase Krebsbach (No. 6). Jystad dropped his opening set in a tie-breaker, but responded well by winning six straight games in the second set and then breaking Willadsen in the final game of the match for a (6-7, 6-0, 7-5) win. Sundstrom was a (6-0, 6-0) winner against Chris Buckingham at No. 1, improving to 5-0 this spring. Krebsbach was impressive in his first varsity match of the spring, defeating Josh Trueblood (6-1, 6-1).
