The Luther women’s tennis team finished up its regular season schedule with yet another match against a regionally ranked opponent.  The Norse, currently ranked No. 15 in the Central Region, traveled to face No. 13 Grinnell and came away with a 5-4 road victory.

Grinnell opened the scoring with an (8-4) victory at No. 2 doubles that saw Toby Cain and Emma MacDonald defeat Luther’s Elise Allen and Katy Lindstrom.  The Norse leveled the score at 1-1 when Cami Czech and Katie Howe rattled off the final four games for an (8-5) victory at No. 1 against Sadhana Athreya and Laura Krull.  The match at No. 3 came down to a tie-breaker where Grinnell’s Shirlene Luke and Clothilde Thirouin edged Luther’s Lola White-Baer and Annie Whiteley (9-8 (3)).

The Grinnell lead grew to 3-1 when Krull dispatched White-Baer (6-2, 6-0) at No. 3.  Adriana DePaolis put up a good fight at No. 6, but dropped a (6-3, 6-3) decision to Hannah Feldman, putting Grinnell within one point of clinching the match.  Cami Czech got the Norse back on track, winning (6-4, 6-3) over Athreya at No. 1 to make it a 4-2 score, keeping Luther within striking distance.  Katie Howe was next off the court, winning the first 11 games in a (6-0, 6-1) win against Cain at No. 4, pulling the Norse even closer.

Trailing 4-3, Elise Allen (No. 2) and Katy Lindstrom (No. 5) both won first sets to put Luther in a good position.  Allen held off Luk in the second set for a (6-1, 6-4) victory to tie the match at 4-4.  Lindstrom was knotted at 3-3 in the second set, but prevailed in a long service game and then picked up a break of serve before serving out the match to clinch (6-2, 6-3) over Thirouin.

Luther completes the regular season at 17-11 overall.  The Norse will compete in the IIAC Automatic Qualifier tournament on Saturday, April 28.  Luther is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3 seed Wartburg in the semi-final match at Cornell College.  Top-seeded Coe and No. 4 seed Cornell will meet in the other semi-final match at Coe College.  The championship match will be played later in the day at Coe College with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
