It was a tale of two completely different games this afternoon, as Luther and Buena Vista split the first two games of their three-game series here in Decorah. With a forecast of rain likely for Saturday, the two teams decided to play the two seven inning contests this afternoon.Tomorrow they will wrap up the series with a nine inning game that will begin at 10:00 a.m.
In game one, the game was scoreless until the top of the seventh, when the Beavers manufactured a run that proved to be the game winner.Following a lead-off walk, the Beavers advanced Eric Croghan to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Joe Paletta. Two batters later, Weston Foxx drove in the game winner with a single.
Buena Vista's Ian Grigsby won a pitching duel, throwing a five-hit shutout. Matt Reynolds (2-3) went the distance on the mound for the Norse. Reynolds spread six hits, walked five and struck out three.
In game two the bats came alive for both teams as the clubs combined for 22 hits. The Norse won the two and a half hour slug fest 9-6. Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the fifth, Luther scored four runs on three hits that secured the victory.
Chris Reynolds drove in three runs and Ryan Bahnemann drove in two. Bahnemann was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Matt Reynolds, Matt Larson and Ian Fitzgerald also had two hits. Reynolds and Larson both scored once and Fitzgerald scored three times.
Danny Smith (1-3) picked up the win in relief. Alec Knop was credited with the save, allowing just one hit in the final two frames and striking out three.
The split gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 2-5, 9-12 overall. Buena Vista is now 3-5 in league play, 11-11 overall.
