Time and time again this season the doubles matches have proved to be important for the Luther men’s tennis team and this match was no different as the Norse won two of the three doubles matches on the way to a 6-3 win over Dubuque. Luther improves to 20-5 overall and 7-0 in the IIAC with the victory.
Tyler Zinnecker and Tyler Van Heest dispatched Shawn Iben and Dishon Deering (8-0) at No. 3 doubles to give Luther an early 1-0 edge. Nick Mozena and James Ayer broke in the first game of the match and then added a second break near the end, winning (8-4) against Paul Roberts and Demetrious Johnson at No. 2. Dubuque’s Nick Garcia and Andrew Sheedy won by an (8-5) score over Luther’s Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki in a battle or ranked opponents.
Quinn Foley (No. 5) and Joe LaFountaine (No. 6) also took to the courts during the doubles action and both rolled to straight set wins to put the Norse ahead, 4-1. Foley beat Nikolay Gospidinov (6-2, 6-2) while LaFountaine was a (6-2, 6-1) winner over Mike Braden. Mozena clinched the match with a (6-0, 6-0) win against Johnson at No. 3, and Karki cruised to a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Roberts at No. 2.
