Luther completed its opening weekend of Iowa Conference action splitting with Simpson 4-2 and 2-1 in eight innings this afternoon in Indianola.
In game one, the Norse jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to producing four of their eight hits in the ball game. The Norse added a run in the top of the seventh securing its first conference victory of the year.
Ryan Bahnemann led the Norse attack going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs. Chris Erickson was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Matt Reynolds (2-2) was credited with the win. Reynolds pitched five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and walked three. Danny Smith was credited with the save allowing just one hit in two innings of work.
Simpson manufactured a run in the bottom of the eighth to secure the nightcap victory. Thomas Weber drove in Luther's lone run in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt that scored Robby Jewell who started the inning with a single to left field.
Smith was credited with the loss in relief. Smith took over for Alex Byom who pitched six solid innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking three and striking out three. Smith worked the final 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 8-9, 1-2 in the IIAC. Simpson improved to 5-1 in league play, 11-9 overall.
Luther travels to Loras College on Tuesday, April 3 for a double header that will begin at 3:30 p.m.
