Luther College lost its conference opener to Wartburg College 77-72 tonight at the Regents Center.
The Norse battled a Knight squad that was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches' poll, and held the lead until 2:34 remaining in the second half, when the Knights took a 67-65 lead on two free throws. The Norse tied the game for the final time 67-67 thanks to a Taylor Johnson jumper with 2:14 remaining. Unfortunately, the Knights outscored the Norse 10-5 down the stretch en route to the victory.
Luther shot 46 percent from the field that included a 7-for-17 effort from behind the three-point line. The Norse also won the battle of the boards 41-37. Wartburg shot 38 percent, but committed 15 turnovers compared to 26 by the Norse. Wartburg's bench also outscored Luther's 17-12.
Four Norse tallied double digits led by Taylor Johnson with 19 points. Logan Hjerleid produced a season high 13, while Katie Etter and Nellie Nelson were credited with 12 and 10 respectively. Nelson's point total was also a season high. Meagan Koepnick fell one point shy with nine. Nelson grabbed a team best nine rebounds, whil eKoepnick collected eight and dished out a game high six assists.
Wartburg was led by Leslie Wilson's double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Maddie Sadecky and Stephanie Reiter each chipped in 16.
The Norse return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when they will face Loras College in Dubuque. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will be audio streamed and broadcast on 1240 AM KWLC.
