Fans in the Regents Center watched a hard fought Iowa Conference battle this afternoon. Unfortunately for Norse fans, the Dutch of Central College prevailed, 77-74 in double overtime.
Trailing 46-42 with a little over four minutes remaining in the game, Luther put together an 11-4 run and held a 53-50 lead with 24 ticks left on the clock. Central's Demarco Turner sent the game into the first overtime with a three-point bucket with the clock reading seven seconds remaining.
In the first overtime, Luther found itself down six (58-64) with 39 seconds left, and battled back with an 8-2 run, capped off by a Dane Larson jumper at the buzzer that sent the game into a second extra frame tied at 66-66.
In the final five minutes of action, Central's Jack Bruns scored off an offensive rebound, giving the Dutch a 73-72 advantage with 46 seconds remaining and the Dutch never relinquished the lead the rest of the game.
John Androus paced the Norse with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Larson was credited with 18, while Tyler Wedemeier and Michael Crocker provided 11 and 10 respectively.
Central's Jacob Winkler also tallied a double-double posting game highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds, despite fouling out one minute into the first overtime. Turner (16), Chris Lehmann (11) and Bruns (10) completed the list of double digit scorers.
The loss drops Luther into a tie for first place with a league record of 10-4, 16-6 overall. Central clinched a spot in the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament with today's victory. The Dutch are 8-6, 16-7.
Luther finishes the regular season schedule with two roads games next week. The Norse travel to Buena Vista University on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Coe College on Saturday, Feb. 18.
