After suffering its first loss of the season, the Luther women’s tennis team returned to its winning ways with an 8-1 victory over Wartburg on Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Decorah. The Norse raced out to a 3-0 lead with a doubles sweep and rallied in a couple singles matches to close out the win over the Knights.
Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley dropped the opening game at No. 3 before cruising to an (8-1) decision against Jessica Behrer and Brita Jensen. Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer were tied up 3-3 in the early going at No. 1 before pulling away for an (8-3) victory over Claire Evans and Melissa Davis. Wartburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead at No. 2 before Elise Allen and Maggie Helms rallied back by winning eight of the last nine games to earn an (8-4) victory, defeating Jenny Dallenbach and Michelle McKenzie.
Leading 3-0, Luther received victories from Jenna Myers and Elise Allen to clinch the team victory. Myers was a (6-0, 6-2) winner over Behrer at No. 6 while Allen beat Davis (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2. Chalhoub fought off a rally in the first set from Dallenbach to claim a (7-5, 6-2) win at No. 1, making it a 6-0 score overall.
Wartburg won the first set in the other three matches, but the Norse rallied back to win third set super tie-breakers at No. 3 and No. 4 to tally two more points against the Knights. Lindstrom was a (4-6, 6-3, (10-6)) winner over Katherine Ross at No. 3 while Helms knocked off Evans (5-7, 6-2, (10-3)) at No. 4. The Knights picked up a victory at No. 5 in the last match of the day to avoid the shutout.
The Norse are 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the IIAC. Luther will travel to Saint Peter, Minn., to compete in the ITA Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22.
