It took two extra innings of the international tie breaker before Luther secured a 7-6 victory over Bowdoin in the final game of the spring trip to the National Training Center, Clermont, Fla.
After Bowdoin jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, Kelsey Weindruch tied the game with a three-run shot to left-center field in the fifth frame.
In the eighth, Kelsey Kittleson gave the Norse a short-lived lead with a three-run home run. Bowdoin answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, sending the game into what proved to be the ninth and final frame of the game. In the ninth, Elisa Smith drove in Mallory Broderick on a fielder's choice. Broderick started the inning on second base and advanced to third when Morgan Franklin reach on an error.
Becca Girvan (8-1) went the distance in the circle. After giving up a three-run home run in the first, Girvan proceeded to retire the next 16 batters in a row, that included a string of six consecutive strike outs, en route to 12 for the game.
Luther completed its spring trip with a record of 8-2 and is now 12-2 overall.
Next week, the Norse will return home to play UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m. This game will be video streamed.
