The Luther men’s tennis team returned to its winning ways with a 6-3 victory on the road against a regionally ranked foe in the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. The Norse grabbed a 2-1 lead in the doubles matches and won the top four singles spots to secure the road victory.
Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki dropped the first two games at No. 1 doubles, but then cruised to an (8-2) victory over Chris Kuna and Joey Minear. Quinn Foley and James Ayer also played a superb match at No. 2, dominating the action in an (8-1) victory against Ryan Van Linde and Dirk Van Rybroek. Tyler Zinnecker and Aaron Gendron battled back and forth with Michael Roden and David Stingley at No. 3 before falling (9-8) to put UW-Eau Claire on the board.
Karki closed out a tight first set and then rolled in the second set, defeating Van Linde at No. 2 to give Luther a 3-1 advantage. After the Blugolds won at No. 5 to make it a 3-2 score, Sundstrom beat Kuna in a battle of regionally ranked players to give the Norse a 4-2 lead. Torstein Jystad won his opening set at No. 6, but saw Roden rally for a (2-6, 6-2, 7-5) victory.
With the match still in doubt and the Norse holding onto a narrow 4-3 advantage, Matt Bellio clinched the victory with a (7-6, 7-6) win against Minear at No. 4. Nick Mozena held off Florent Marco late in both sets, winning (7-5, 7-5) at No. 3 to account for the final margin.
Luther will return home at 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the IIAC for a trio of matches on Saturday, April 14. The Norse host UW-La Crosse, Carleton, and Loras in a busy day at the Luther courts.
