It was a similar story for Luther in its final match of the Warhawk Invite as the Norse fell behind in doubles, but rallied to win five singles matches and the meet. After trailing 2-1, Luther came back to earn its second straight 6-3 victory against a quality opponent.
Ramesh Karki and Nick Mozena cruised to an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles against Taylor Johnson and Miles Greenwald to level the match at 1-1 after the Thunder had scored the opening point at No. 1 doubles. Tyler Van Heest and Tyler Zinnecker went back and forth at No. 3 doubles before falling (8-6) to Joel Parrish and David Buursma.
Scott Sundstrom completed a perfect singles weekend at No. 1 by dispatching Johnson (6-2, 6-0) to even the overall score at 2-2. Mozena won for the second time on the day by breaking Jordan Williams in the final game of a (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) match at No. 3. Wheaton tied things up yet again with a (7-5, 7-6) victory from Parrish over Aaron Gendron at No. 4. With the match hanging in the balance, Karki came through with a clutch performance, edging Josh Ward (4-6, 6-1, 7-6) at No. 2 to give Luther a 4-3 advantage. James Ayer held on for a (6-3, 7-6) win against Buursma at No. 5 to seal the victory for the Norse. Torstein Jystad won his second close singles match of the weekend, rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win (6-2, 2-6, 7-6) over Greenwald at No. 6.
Luther improves to 4-1 overall after winning two out of three matches over the weekend. The Norse will enter Iowa Conference competition with a triangular in Mt. Vernon, Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 18. Luther will battle Wartburg at 1:00 p.m. and then face-off against Cornell College at 5:00 p.m.
