A doubles sweep keyed a 6-0 victory for the Luther women’s tennis team over Cornell in the semi-finals of the IIAC Tournament on Saturday, October 8. The Norse jumped in front when Lola White-Baer and Katie Howe won (8-2) at No. 3 doubles over Claudia Landsman and Kathleen Ellis. Cami Czech and Cassandra Chalhoub rolled to an (8-3) victory against Kirsten Lasley and Ariana Hudson at No. 1 doubles to make it 2-0. Elise Allen and Katy Lindstrom edged Kara Middleton and Alyssa Zavislak (8-6) at No. 2 doubles to complete the sweep.
Luther advanced to the championship match after winning in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6. Allen made it 4-0 with a (6-0, 6-0) win over Middleton at No. 3. White-Baer and Howe finished within seconds of each other to give the Norse a 6-0 win. White-Baer was a (6-0, 6-1) winner against Landsman while Howe defeated Ellie Purdy by a (6-0, 6-2) score.
The Norse improved to 11-3 overall with the win and advanced to the championship match of the IIAC Team Tournament against Coe.
The Luther women’s tennis team played another close match with Coe, but came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision in the IIAC championship match. Both teams won the same spots as they had during the regular season and it produced another 5-4 result. With the 2nd place finish, the Norse finish the dual meet portion of the fall schedule at 11-4 overall.
Lola White-Baer and Katie Howe continued their strong play from the morning at the bottom of the lineup, winning (8-1) at No. 3 doubles against Jordan Ferree and Elizabeth Hoffmann. The Kohawks won the other two spots to take a 2-1 edge heading into the singles matches.
Cami Czech dropped a (6-2, 6-0) decision to Michelle Schupbach at No. 1 and Katy Lindstrom lost (6-1, 6-0) to Jackie Pedersen at No. 4 as Coe moved within one point of the title by taking a 4-1 lead. Luther then rallied by winning the next three matches to level the score at 4-4. White-Baer won (6-0, 6-0) against Ferree at No. 5, Howe won (7-6 (6), 6-1) over Hoffmann at No. 6 and Elise Allen defeated Sara Ohlman (7-5, 6-2) at No. 3. Cassandra Chalhoub battled against Tai Lucero at the No. 2 slot before falling (6-1, 6-3).
The Norse will conclude the fall season by competing in the IIAC Individual Tournament on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
