The Luther women’s tennis team finally saw its winning streak come to an end, as UW-La Crosse edged the Norse 5-4 in a tightly contested match-up in Waverly, Iowa. The match with the Eagles was the fourth of the weekend for Luther and the sixth in a busy week for the team. With the defeat, Luther drops to 6-2 overall while remaining 3-0 in the IIAC.
UW-La Crosse struck first when Megan Fallon and Lindsay Seccombe combined for an (8-3) victory over Annie Whiteley and Lola White-Baer at No. 3 doubles. Cami Czech and Katy Lindstrom finished off a perfect 4-0 weekend at No. 1 doubles with an (8-3) win of their own, defeating Olivia Hartwick and Andrea Vivian to knot the score at 1-1. Cassandra Chalhoub and Elise Allen trailed 7-4 late in their match at No. 2 doubles, but rallied within 7-6 before falling (8-6) to Jenny Maruyama and Abby Tresedder, giving the Eagles at 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Allen won her fourth singles match of the weekend, beating Tresedder (6-1, 6-4) at No. 3 to give Luther its second point, but UW-La Crosse showed off its depth with straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Trailing 4-2, Czech earned a hard fought (6-4, 6-4) win over Mara Weiner at No. 1 to pull Luther within 4-3. It was the sixth win of the weekend and eighth of the week for Czech against only one defeat.
Chalhoub battled the whole way in a streaky match against Maruyama at No. 2 before falling (7-5, 6-4). After UW-La Crosse clinched the victory, White-Baer fought off a late charge and a match point against her, prevailing (6-1, 6-7 (5), (11-9)) against Hartwick at No. 4.
The Norse resume IIAC competition this week with a road trip to Storm Lake, Iowa to face Buena Vista on Friday, September 16. Luther will also host Dubuque on Saturday, September 17 and Coe on Sunday, September 18.
