Jason Block scored the game winner in the 107th minute on a penalty kick, as Luther defeated University of Dubuque 1-0 in double overtime this evening here in Decorah. The penalty kick was called when Brock Arend was tripped in the box on a run towards the Spartan goal.
The victory was the second in a row for the Norse decided by a penalty kick, and the fourth time this season a penalty kick has secured a victory.
Luther's win was its eighth in a row, its longest win streak since the 2002 season, when the Norse won 10 in a row. The school record for consecutive wins was set in 1996 with 16.
During this current string, the Norse have posted six shutouts. Steve O'Meara turned away seven shots on goal tonight en route to his sixth shutout of the season. Luther has held eight opponents scoreless en route to a team goals-against-average of 0.32.
Luther remains undefeated in the Iowa Conference with a mark of 3-0-0, 9-2-1 overall. Dubuque falls to 0-3-0, 6-4-1.
The Norse return to action on Sunday when they will travel to Clarke University in Dubuque, for a non-conference match that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
