The opera, based on the play by Elmer Rice with music by Kurt Weill, is a story of romance between Rose Maurrant and her neighbor Sam Kaplan and the extramarital affair of Rose's mother, Anna.
The show portrays the ordinary romances, squabbles and gossips of the neighbors as the mounting tensions involving the Maurrant family eventually build into a tragedy of epic proportions.
David Judisch, Luther professor of music, is opera performance course instructor and stage director for the production. The opera will be performed with the Luther College Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Tony Guzman, Luther associate professor of music.
Andrea Oldfield is assistant director.
