The Luther women’s tennis team wrapped up a busy weekend of competition with another road match, this time traveling to Waverly, Iowa to play Wartburg College. The Norse swept the doubles matches in convincing fashion on the way to an 8-1 victory over the Knights.
Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson led from the beginning, cruising to an (8-2) victory at No. 2 doubles against Katherine Ross and Jenna Wilkinson. Jenna Myers and Olivia Heitz paired up for another win at No. 3, defeating Jessica Behrer and Marissa Buresh by an (8-3) margin. Maggie Helms and Caroline Treis staked the Norse to a commanding 3-0 lead after an (8-4) win over Melissa Davis and Liz Rucker at No. 1.
Helms and Treis cruised to singles wins to clinch the match for the Norse. Helms beat Emily Rasmussen (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 to make it 4-0 before Treis won (6-1, 6-1) against Rucker at the No. 5 slot. White-Baer nailed down a straight set win at No. 1, knocking off Ross (6-2, 6-2). Myers withstood a first set rally from Behrer, winning (7-5, 6-1) at No. 4. Heitz also fought off Buresh by a (6-4, 6-3) margin at No. 6. Wartburg’s Davis defeated Luther’s Adriana DePaolis by a (6-4, 6-2) margin in the final match of the day, making it an 8-1 final.
With the win, Luther improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Iowa Conference.
The Norse return to Waverly, Tuesday, Sept. 10 to play Grinnell College in a neutral site matcy-up that is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
