St. Olaf College - Recap

The first game on Legacy Field in Carlson Stadium resulted in a victory as Luther rolled to a 44-20 win over St. Olaf College. The Norse racked up 397 yards of total offense with with 300 coming on the ground. The Norse held a 17-7 lead at halftime and outscored the Oles 27-13 in the final two quarters of play.

Senior Nick Slavens and sophomore quarterback Ian Kuykendall had career afternoons. Slavens put the Norse on the board first with a career high 21-yard reception for a touchdown from Brady Letney. Early in the third quarter, Slavens scored on a career long 55-yard scamper. He ended the afternoon eight yards shy of the 100-yard mark and average 18.4 yards per carry. 

Kuykendal, who took over for Letney midway through the first half, rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, all single game career highs. He also threw for a career high 76 yards, connecting with Justin Montgomery for a 13-yard touchdown, and a 40-yard strike to Travis Vargas.

Defensively, the Norse held the Oles to just 53 yards on the ground en route to 348 yards of total offense. Sam Fierce (9), Isaac Highum (8), Mitch Van Epps (8) and Josh Olerud (7) led the defensive unit in tackles. Van Epps and Michael Noll were both credited with a sack.

St. Olaf quarterback Ricardo Johnson III threw for 295 yards and one touchdowns. His main target was Troy Peterson who made 14 catches for 150 yards.

The win was the fifth in a row over the Oles. Luther is now 1-1, while St. Olaf fell to 1-1.

Luther is off next week. The Norse will begin Iowa Conference play at home on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they will host the Spartans of University of Dubuque. Kick-off will take place at 1:00 p.m.
