The Luther women’s tennis team’s six match winning streak was halted on Sunday, Sept. 16 in Cedar Rapids as the Norse dropped a 7-2 decision to Coe. The Kohawks narrowly grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles and won five of the six singles match to earn the victory.
Elise Allen and Maggie Helms put the Norse on the board first with an (8-2) victory over Laura Birky and Diannah Watson at No. 2 while Coe nailed down an identical (8-2) victory at No. 1 to knot the score at 1-1. The No. 3 doubles match was tightly contested with Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley leading 6-5 and 7-6 before falling (9-7) to Coe’s Sara Ohlman and Elizabeth Hoffmann.
Trailing 2-1, Luther looked to get back into the match as Lola White-Baer and Helms both won first sets. Helms would go on to score the second point for the Norse with a (6-4, 6-2) win against Birky at No. 5. White-Baer led much of the way at No. 3 before dropping a (4-6, 7-6 (2), (10-3)) decision to Ohlman. Adriana DePaolis also had a good start at No. 6, leading 4-1, before falling (7-5, 6-3) to Jordan Ferree. Coe also collected wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 to account for the final margin.
The Norse are now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the IIAC heading into a Tuesday, Sept. 18 match-up at home against Wartburg.
