The Luther women’s tennis team won its fifth match in a row with an 8-1 victory at Dubuque on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Dubuque, Iowa. The Norse raced out to a 2-0 lead in doubles and held on to earn a doubles sweep before winning five of the six singles matches to account for the final margin.
Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley moved into the No. 1 slot and posted an (8-2) win over Ashley Schlueter and Alexandra Dixon to give Luther the first point of the day. Maggie Helms and Jenna Myers quickly followed with an (8-2) win of their own against Nichole Schmaltz and Stephanie LoCasto at No. 2. With the score at 2-0 in favor of the Norse, Kylie Kruse and Sarah Bowman battled back and forth at No. 3 before prevailing (9-8 (12-10)) over Aoi Karino and Janine Wegner to make it 3-0. Kruse and Bowman fought off five match points in the tie-breaker before picking up the victory.
Lindstrom and Whiteley clinched the match with outstanding strong singles performances. Lindstrom was a (6-1, 6-0) winner over Schmaltz at No. 1 while Whiteley put together a (6-0, 6-0) victory at No. 4, defeating LoCasto. Helms won her match (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2 over Schlueter while Myers beat Dixon (6-0, 6-4). Kruse came back after the long doubles match to nail down a (6-0, 6-3) decision against Karino at No. 5 while Bowman dropped a (6-2, 6-2) decision to Wegner at No. 6.
